13 Behind-The-Scenes Facts About "Love Island" That Will Make You View The Villa Completely Differently

With season 8 of Love Island USA in the books (don't worry, no finale spoilers, here!) and just a few weeks left of the original Love Island based in the UK, I'm starting to feel the withdrawals.

Luckily, there's still a lot left to learn about the iconic reality show, even for viewers who have seen every episode of every franchise. Can I pull you for a chat? Because these behind-the-scenes facts will change the way you think about Love Island for good.

1. Peacock revealed that, even though Love Island USA is filmed in real time, there is roughly a 2-day delay between filming and each episode's release.

"Love Island USA leverages Fiji's 16-hour time difference from ET time to its advantage," Peacock explained, "as production uses those crucial hours to edit footage and produce episodes in time to drop nightly on Peacock. That means fans are watching shocking dumpings, messy moments, and steamy connections unfold that the Islanders themselves are likely still reeling from."

2. It's no secret that the islanders are extremely disconnected from the outside world while they're in the villa, but few realize just how far production goes to keep them isolated and focused on the show. The phones the islanders get are set to display the wrong date and time, so islanders never truly know what day it is.

3. Viewers are very familiar with the tradition where the boys make breakfast for the girls, but what about lunch and dinner? UK contestant Callum Jones says that, while everyone's dietary needs were catered for, cravings were not.

"You make your own breakfast, and for lunch and dinner they have caterers," the Season 6 contestant disclosed. "Each day they bring something different, and sometimes it was food I’ve never tasted, which I enjoyed. We had a lot of different meats and fish and vegan options for those who are vegan — everyone was fairly catered for."

"During my time in the villa, the choice was limited in terms of the food that you could request," he added. "For example, when we asked for certain things that we were craving (like pitta bread and hummus), it didn’t come until a few weeks later. We ate well, though, and had all the basics we needed, like cereal, eggs, fruit, and biscuits. etc."

4. Speaking of lunch and dinner, UK executive producer Mike Spencer explained that the production crew tried filming during mealtimes, but they quickly gave up because "the chat is s***."

5. Outside of mealtime, 85 cameras hidden around the villa (74 cameras in the UK's villa) help fans catch every last detail of the drama.

6. Former Love Island UK contestant Samie Elishi explained how producers prevent islanders from overpacking.

She told her YouTube viewers, "You get two large suitcases of 23 kg (50 lbs) that you can take with you. I had two large suitcases and a little hand luggage as well."

7. Considering all the drama that unfolds on the show, islanders barely consume any alcohol. As Love Island USA contestant Phoebe Siegel confirmed, drinking on the show "is more like sipping. Slowly. Really, really slowly."

She told her TikTok followers, "In my season, on average, you only get one glass of wine a night. You get to choose red or white, and let me tell you it's not a generous pour."

8. On Love Island USA Season 8, episode 34, the final Aftersun episode of the season, host Ciara Miller asked eliminated islanders a question that's been on everyone's mind: "Is it weird getting down and dirty in bed while having cameras on you?"

While Titi confirmed, "Yes, absolutely," Dylan also explained, "You just go for it." That takes PDA to whole new levels!

9. Islanders get one day per week outside of the villa, but they're not allowed to talk about anything to do with the show.

Love Island UK winner Kem Cetinay revealed that the show doesn't air one day per week "to clean the villa, and you take your mics off, and normally we go to the beach and we just chill out. Not a lot of people know this. What happens is when you take your mics off, you’re not allowed to talk about anything to do with the show."

10. Islander Millie Court from the Love Island UK Season 7 also explained what happens during off-camera days in the villa. When cameras aren't rolling, contestants don't sleep in couples or discuss anything relating to relationships and drama. She calls them their "chill days."

11. Despite her glamorous appearance, Love Island USA host Ariana Maddix has a low-key daily life while staying in Fiji. She stays in a hotel room with a kitchenette and a washer-dryer. She's just like us!

12. UK islander Mike Boateng shared that, while he was in the villa in 2020, condoms were everywhere around the villa, including in secret drawers. Safe sex is a top priority for producers!

13. Lastly, if you think you've seen it all — think again! 30 Love Island franchises from 25 locations around the world have filmed or are scheduled to film at least one season, so there's plenty of drama and romance to go around.
