The Iditarod is a test of wits and patience unlike any other in the sporting calendar. Mushers trek through the wintry mix of frigid temperatures and exhaustion, wading through a landscape immortalized in Robert W. Service and Jack London tales.

The 2025 Iditarod purse is $500,000, per a news release from the Iditarod organizers, and Holmes will win the largest percentage of that as the winner.

By comparison, the 2024 Iditarod purse was $574,000. The famed Alaskan sled race's payout sat at a fixed total for six straight years prior to 2023, when the organization announced it was bumping up winnings by $50,000.

The Iditarod hasn't announced exactly how much money Holmes will net as the 2025 race winner. History can serve as a useful guide to estimate a figure, though. In 2024, Alaskan Dallas Seavey took home the title of Iditarod winner. He was rewarded handsomely, walking home with $55,900, about 9.75% of the total purse value.

Seavey pocketed the largest percentage of the event's cash prize. He also collected $2,500 in cash and $3,000 in gold nuggets after earning a pair of awards—the GCI Dorothy G. Page Halfway Award and Northrim Bank Achieve More Award—throughout his pilgrimage.
