"A rich blend of a fantasy world, steamy romance, and political thriller."

Book adaptations don't always work, and there are plenty of examples of them being fumbled. However, when they're done well it can be a joy.

CBS

Well I recently asked the BuzzFeed community for the books the want to be adapted, and here are some of the most popular responses:

1. Strangers by Dean Koontz

Cover of "Strangers" by Dean Koontz featuring a gloomy motel scene with quotes praising the book as a gripping read

Berkley

"I think it would be the best book to movie adaptation. It was such a good book and it's got kind of a sci-fi/horror feel. I could see it making an epic movie."

2. The Kushiel series by Jacqueline Carey

Cover of "Kushiel's Dart" by Jacqueline Carey: a person stands in profile, arms crossed, with a rose design and arches in the background

Tor Fantasy

"They are a rich blend of a fantasy world, steamy romance, and political thriller that I think could fill the gap soon to be left by the end of Outlander."

3. Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn

Book cover for "Killers of a Certain Age" by Deanna Raybourn, featuring a stylized hand holding a knife

Berkley Publishing Corporation, U.S.

"Four retired assassins being targeted by their former employer. The tough part would be the flashback scenes (related to the present) or finding the perfect cast of sixty-something-year-old actresses (I think Jodie Foster would play the perfect Helen)."

4. Robin Hobb's trilogies

Book cover of "Assassin's Apprentice" by Robin Hobb, with praise from George R.R. Martin. Features a medieval-inspired design with a horse emblem

Harper Voyager

"I'd love to see Robin Hobbs' trilogies come to life. There are nine main books (three trilogies), and six side books (two trilogies). I think so many books are a lot to put to screen, but the first trilogy tells a mostly contained story, so you could do that."

5. Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson

Cover of "The Way of Kings" by Brandon Sanderson, features a figure in armor with a cape, holding a spear on a rocky landscape. Book one of The Stormlight Archive

Tor Books

"I'd love to see the Stormlight Archives be brought to life, but I don't have faith in Hollywood being able to do it justice."

6. A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole

Book cover of "A Confederacy of Dunces" by John Kennedy Toole, featuring an illustration of a man in an ornate city setting with a parrot on his head

Grove Press / Atlantic Monthly Press

"When are we finally going to get that A Confederacy of Dunces film? It's allegedly cursed because there have been several attempts to make the film that have fallen through, including one that would have starred John Belushi as Ignatius. I don't remember a ton from the book, but at this point I'm just curious as to what an adaptation would look like and why it's so difficult to get off the ground."

7. Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

Book cover for "Fourth Wing" by Rebecca Yarros features ornate design with the phrase "Graduate or Die" and mentions it's a bestseller in the Empyrean series

Piatkus

"Fourth Wing would be incredible to see an adaptation of. The world and characters are so interesting and the books are epic. I feel like a series would do it better justice than a movie and I can just picture the last moment of the first season!"

8. Shelter by Jung Yun

Book cover for "Shelter" by Jung Yun, featuring a bright yellow house silhouette against a blue sky, with a praise quote from the Los Angeles Times

Picador

"Probably an HBO miniseries adaptation of Jung Yun's novel Shelter. I'd love to see Lee Je Hoon and Choi Min Shik pair up as the fraught father and son duo Kyung and Jin Cho, whose family relationship was damaged by so much childhood trauma and how all that resentment resurfaces. Plus it would be so cool to see Je Hoon portray a spiralling flawed figure. And I'd love to see Mira Nair helm this project."

9. Fantasticland by Mike Bockoven

Cover of "FantasticLand" by Mike Bockoven featuring a silhouetted Ferris wheel in a dark, ominous setting

Skyhorse Publishing

"I just want an HBO miniseries so bad. It's like if Lord of the Flies took place at Disney World after a hurricane."

10. Otherland series by Tad Williams

City of Golden Shadow" by Tad Williams, featuring an abstract cityscape. Top text reads "New York Times Best-Selling Author."

Penguin

"I’ve always thought the Otherland series of books by Tad Williams would make great films, really interesting characters and incredible ideas."

11. Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Book cover of "Six of Crows" by Leigh Bardugo, featuring a crow illustration and text about a dangerous heist. Includes a Netflix adaptation note

Orion Children's Books

"Definitely with a spooky rendition of Carol Of The Bells in the background while they storm the Ice Court."

12. Magician by Raymond Feist

"The Original Masterwork of Magic and Adventure."

Harper Voyager

"It's an utterly brilliant and innovative fantasy series that has waited long enough for an adaption – plus Feist is very much still around and has often spoken about potential adaptions and how they could work. I feel like he would help ensure a faithful portrayal on screen – unlike what happened with Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time TV series"

katlinel

13. The Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull

Book cover of "Fablehaven" by Brandon Mull features a troll-like creature sitting on a tree trunk with colorful, glowing fairies surrounding it

Shadow Mountain

"I would love to see the Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull become a movie/series of movies. Good casting and budget would be essential but I really think if done right it could be the next Harry Potter for kids and adults."

14. The Psy-Changeling series and Guild Hunter series by Nalinii Singh

Book cover for "Tangle of Need" by Nalini Singh; features a close-up of a person's face with claw marks and green text below

Gollancz

"There are these series of romance/fantasy books by Kiwi author, Nalini Singh called the Psy/Changeling series and the Guild Hunter series that I would *love* to see get adapted into a TV show.

The world building and characters are so fascinating and intriguing, and it would be magnificent to see it come to live on the screen. HBO would have to pick it up though because it's quite raunchy though I suppose they could cut down the intimate scenes, though that would be a shame."

15. Venus in Furs by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch

Cover of "Venus in Furs" by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, showing an illustrated woman with closed eyes wearing an ornate dress and choker

Penguin Publishing Group

"I'd love to see a fully-fledged period piece of Venus in Furs. I'm tempted to write a screenplay myself, actually – a proper exploration into the origins of masochism in imperial bohemia. I think, with a feminist twist, it could be fantastic."

16. The Hollows by Kim Harrison

Book cover for "Dead Witch Walking" by Kim Harrison. Features a woman with a tattoo, jeans with a belt, and a dark gothic church in the background

Tantor Media Inc

"Been wanting it for years since I've first read them. The first book is Dead Witch Walking. It's such an amazing read, I read in high school and I still enjoy reading them now and I'm in the early 30's. if you haven't read them I would highly recommend."
