49ers urged to trade Mac Jones if one specific draft pick is offered

The San Francisco 49ers are in a very interesting spot, as they have a very valuable player in Mac Jones who could be a massive help for many teams around the NFL.

But, even though he's the 49ers' backup QB, they have no plans to trade him for nothing. A team like the New York Jets might have interest, but the 49ers won't trade him without getting something good in return.

Bleacher Report's Moe Moton is urging the 49ers to trade Jones, but only if they receive one specific thing in a trade offer: a second-round pick.

49ers urged to trade Mac Jones if a team offers a 2nd round pick

"San Francisco 49ers: Trade QB Mac Jones for a 2027 2nd-round pick," Moton writes. "Because of quarterback Brock Purdy's injury history, the 49ers should keep Jones unless a team offers at least a second-round pick."

This simple barrier for the 49ers in a trade of Jones makes a lot of sense. Obviously, a second-round pick would be a valuable selection, especially if the acquiring team needs QB help enough to swing a deal for Jones.

Jones will hit free agency after 2026 and would surely have plenty of clubs lining up to make big offers after his promising stint with the 49ers. Teams might be hoping to get the next Sam Darnold.

Jones was great in 2025, throwing for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns, six interceptions, a 69.6% completion percentage, a 5-3 record, and recording a 97.4 passer rating that was the best mark of his career.

The real reason why Moton has set the second-round pick as the asking price is that a second-rounder is the kind of pick the 49ers wouldn't be able to get for Jones if he leaves in free agency.

The best the 49ers could do is a third-round compensatory draft pick. Trading him for a third-rounder wouldn't be enough of a difference to justify trading the best backup QB in the NFL.

Instead, the 49ers should be looking to receive a second-round pick for Jones. If a team makes such an offer, Moton is urging the 49ers to accept that offer.

This is an interesting situation for the 49ers, as Jones has a ton of value, and trading him would make a lot of sense. But, unless they get at least a second-round pick, the 49ers should not move him.
