LeBron James has yet to announce where he will play next season, leaving NBA fans searching social media for any possible clue about his free-agent decision. Philadelphia 76ers fans briefly believed they had found a significant one.
A photo circulating on X appeared to show James’ daughter, Zhuri James, on an enrollment list for the Baldwin School of the Arts & Sciences in Philadelphia. The Full Time Sports account shared the image Thursday and suggested it could connect James’ family to the city.
“BREAKING: Photo surfacing appears to show LeBron James enrolled his child in a school in Philadelphia,” the account wrote.
The image quickly attracted attention from Sixers fans dreaming about James finishing his legendary career alongside Philadelphia stars Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.
There was only one problem: The purported enrollment list was not real.
Fake LeBron James clue sends 76ers fans into a frenzy
X eventually added a Community Note explaining why the image could not be treated as legitimate evidence.
“This image of a school enrollment list is not real,” the note stated. “The version without red bars shows a phone number starting with 555 which is reserved for fictional use in television and films and not used for actual US phone numbers.”

— Full Time Sports (@FullTimeSprts) July 16, 2026That detail exposed the supposed list as a fabrication, but not before it reached fans eager for any update regarding James’ future.
The rumor followed a familiar pattern. Whenever a superstar considers changing teams, social media detectives begin tracking private flights, restaurant appearances, real estate purchases and school enrollments.
Most of those clues go nowhere. That rarely stops fans from becoming invested, especially when a player as important as James is involved.
The Philadelphia rumor also surfaced at the ideal time to generate attention.
James became an unrestricted free agent on June 30 after informing the Los Angeles Lakers that he planned to join another team. He has since been connected to several possible destinations, including the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves and 76ers.
LeBron James continues to keep NBA fans guessing
James did little to quiet the speculation during two public appearances Thursday at Fanatics Fest in New York.
During a live taping of his “Mind the Game” podcast, James encouraged members of the crowd to shout where they wanted him to sign. Philadelphia was among the destinations mentioned.
“Wherever I land in the fall, hopefully, you know, if you’re a ride-or-die LeBron fan, you’ve been down with me since Day 1,” James later said at the CNBC Sport x Boardroom Game Plan Summit. “Hopefully, you ride with me here.”
James also confirmed that his family will be an important part of the decision.
“The family portion is a big thing,” James said. “It’s not just about the team. There’s so many other factors that I’m factoring in right now on what not only best fit me as a player, what best fit me as a person, what best fit me as a ... my happiness, and also with my family as well.”
Those comments explain why a supposed school enrollment gained so much traction. James has publicly acknowledged that his decision goes far beyond basketball, making any perceived family connection to a possible destination feel meaningful.
MORE: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has clear message for Lakers fans after LeBron James exit
There is still no legitimate indication that Zhuri has been enrolled at a Philadelphia school or that James has chosen the Sixers. James averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds in 60 regular-season games for the Lakers last season. He then averaged 23.2 points, 7.3 assists and 6.7 rebounds in the playoffs.
Even at 41, James remains good enough to reshape the championship outlook of whichever team he joins. Philadelphia fans have plenty of reasons to hope the Sixers can land him. A fictional 555 phone number just is not one of them.
