Aday Mara reveals he is ready to become Victor Wembanyama stopper for the OKC Thunder

After losing to the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Finals, the Oklahoma City Thunder went back to the drawing board. It seems they are focused on finding the player who matches up well against Victor Wembanyama.

With Aday Mara going to the Thunder in the 2026 NBA Draft, it seems they have found the answer. At 7'3", Mara was one of the best big men in college basketball at Michigan, and the Thunder want to see that in the NBA for them.

Aday Mara is ready to play the Victor Wembanyama stopper role

During his time with the Wolverines, Mara was arguably the best center in the country. In his junior year, he averaged 12.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, and a whopping 2.6 blocks per game.

That rim protection could be his best trait as he enters the league. It will be a big-time change for him, of course, but he seems prepared for the next level, especially with a looming matchup against Wembanyama.

Most people can agree that the Thunder vs Spurs rivalry just got started in the 2025-26 season. It looks like it will be the Western Conference's primary rivalry unless other teams step up massively.

With that, the Thunder needed more bodies to throw against Wemby, the Spurs' superstar. It will be a challenging task for Mara, but it seems the incoming rookie is ready to play any role head coach Mark Daigneault wants him to play.

"Obviously, Wemby is a great player. It will be a huge challenge, but I am looking forward to it. I guess whatever the coach says, if I have to try to stop him, I have to try. I'm ready, I don't know how yet, but I'm ready," Mara said after getting drafted by the Thunder.

As the years go by, the Thunder are always looking for the best ways to succeed. They managed to do so with the 2025 championship, but they are ready to keep pushing and getting Mara is another step in doing so.
