American Primeval

Netflix

American Primeval has had a lot of time in the sun since its debut on January 9, spending most of the time since then at #1 on Netflix. At least in the US. Now, it’s been booted down to #2 for the second time, and not just by a night of WWE RAW.

The new show that has landed on top of the Netflix Top 10 list is the second season of XO Kitty, the TV series spin-off of the To All The Boys I Loved Before movies where the protagonist’s little sister has her own adventures, and with season 2 now, has had more screen time than her older sister ever did. It also debuted straight at #1, indicating there’s plenty of interest for Kitty’s return.

Season 1 and 2 were well-reviewed by critics, an 81% and a 78% respectively. Audience scores are much lower, a 58% and now 40% for season 2. Though in this case, it seemingly doesn’t matter since plenty of people are clearly watching, and they may not be the type to register with Rotten Tomatoes and post reviews. The main complaints that do exist appear to be about the “sapphic” relationship of the season, as almost all the negative comments are about that aspect.

As for American Primeval, the miniseries does not show any indication at this point that it may break out of that mold and return for a second season. That can indeed happen with miniseries sometimes, but it certainly doesn’t always need to.

Top 10

Netflix

A big success story I wrote about yesterday is the placement of The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live on the list at #3, previously #2, which appears to be higher than any previous Walking Dead series that AMC has put on Netflix, even the original show. Squid Game, of course, is still performing well, fixed at #4 since its Christmas debut, and last we checked, was still pumping out record numbers of views as it tries to catch the first season’s figures. We just don’t know if that’s going to happen yet.

There are not many new additions to the list since the last time I checked in, but one returning series is Castlevania Nocturne, the animated follow-up to the original Castlevania, one of the first projects to truly break the “video game curse” of adaptations, but some fans are not as on board with Nocturne as they were the first one.

We will see how long XO Kitty will last on top, but my guess is that it will be at least a little while, given its popularity.
