Athletics quietly make trade with Cardinals for five-year MLB reliever

The Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals quietly made a trade on Sunday night.

The trade is not groundbreaking for either club, but a five-year Major League veteran was involved.

According to MLB.com's Martin Gallegos, they acquired right-handed reliever Scott Blewett from the Cardinals in exchange for cash considerations.

The Cardinals recently designated Blewett for assignment. He made just one appearance with the NL Central club -- two scoreless innings with two strikeouts.

Blewett, 30, was a second-round draft pick of the Kansas City Royals in 2014.

He's spent time with five different organizations at the MLB level, including an 11-game stint with the Atlanta Braves in 2025.

"Blewett is out of minor league options, which is why he has been such an organizational nomad over the last couple of years," Mark Polishuk of MLB Trade Rumors wrote.

"There’s a chance he can stick with the A’s just because the Sacramento squad needs all the help they can get in the bullpen, so a few solid performances could get Blewett some extra looks."

In 74.2 big league innings, Blewett owns a 4.10 ERA with 63 strikeouts, 34 walks, and a 45.1% ground ball rate.
