The Atlanta Falcons are confident their defense can take another step forward in 2026, and there are certainly reasons for optimism. Young playmakers such as Jalon Walker, Xavier Watts, Brandon Dorlus, and James Pearce Jr. give Atlanta one of its most intriguing defensive cores in years. However, replacing proven veterans Kaden Elliss and David Onyemata may be more difficult than many realize.
Elliss was the heartbeat of Atlanta’s defense over the last three seasons. He led the Falcons with 105 tackles in 2025 while adding 3.5 sacks and serving as one of the defense’s most versatile players. He finished his Atlanta tenure with 351 tackles and 12.5 sacks in 51 games, consistently producing against both the run and pass.
Onyemata’s impact was less flashy but equally important. The veteran defensive tackle started all 17 games last season, recording 62 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and helping stabilize Atlanta’s interior defensive line. While his pass-rush numbers were modest, his leadership and reliability were invaluable.
Atlanta’s young defense faces major test after veteran departures
The good news for Atlanta is that several young defenders are ready for larger roles. Walker is expected to become a centerpiece of Jeff Ulbrich’s defense after an impressive rookie campaign. Dorlus emerged as a breakout performer in 2025 with 8.5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss, while Pearce Jr. led the team with 10.5 sacks. Watts also impressed as a rookie safety, finishing among the team leaders in tackles and interceptions.
Still, the Falcons’ most proven defenders remain safety Jessie Bates III and cornerback A.J. Terrell. Bates recorded 98 tackles and three interceptions in 2025 and continues to be regarded as one of the NFL’s premier safeties. Terrell remains Atlanta’s shutdown corner and one of the league’s most dependable defensive backs.
Atlanta’s defense may ultimately be more talented in 2026, but talent and production are not always the same thing. Until the Falcons’ young stars prove they can replace what Elliss and Onyemata provided, questions about the defense’s ceiling will remain.
