FIFA projected that more than 5 billion viewers would tune in as 48 nations competed across 104 matches spanning venues from Kansas City and Houston to Mexico City. Beyond the goals, rivalries and national pride, however, another opponent commanded attention: extreme heat.

For the first time in FIFA World Cup history, the rules of the game formally recognized the growing threat that high temperatures pose. Hydration breaks—once a rare exception—became a standard feature of tournament play, reflecting a new reality facing athletes, coaches and medical staff alike. As climate change drives more frequent and intense heat waves, the 2026 World Cup became the most closely watched test yet of how elite sport has adapted to a warming world.

FIFA's decision to mandate a three-minute hydration break in every half of every match was a landmark moment. For the first time, a global sports governing body embedded hydration into the rules of the game—not as a contingency for extreme weather but as a standard element of play. That change reflected a broader reality: Heat and hydration have become structural challenges for sport.

However, a three-minute break isn't a hydration strategy. It's an opportunity.

After more than a decade studying how the human body responds to heat stress and fluid loss, I've learned that the critical question is whether athletes know what their bodies need in that moment. Hydration requirements vary dramatically from player to player based on sweat rate, electrolyte losses, workload, environmental conditions and acclimatization status.

As extreme heat becomes an increasingly common feature of elite competition, the conversation must evolve beyond hydration breaks alone. The future of athlete safety will depend not only on creating opportunities to hydrate but on understanding precisely how much hydration each individual athlete requires.​

The Heat Math Nobody Sees

Several 2026 World Cup host cities commonly dealt with extreme heat. Players covering seven or more miles during a match weren't just competing against an opponent, they were competing against a physiological burden that differs dramatically from one athlete to the next. According to research from Lindsay B. Baker of the Gatorade Sports Science Institute, sweat rates could reach up to twentyfold across individuals. Identical temperature and workload can lead to entirely different physiological responses.

That variability exposes the limits of a one-size-fits-all hydration approach. A mandatory hydration break assumes every athlete faces a similar fluid replacement challenge; in reality, hydration needs are highly individualized and influenced by sweat rate, electrolyte losses, body composition, fitness level and heat acclimatization. One player may lose less than a liter of fluid during a match, while another may lose several liters and thousands of milligrams of sodium under the same conditions.

As heat becomes an increasingly important factor in elite competition, the challenge is understanding which athletes needs what, when and how much. Hydration breaks are a step forward, but personalized hydration strategies will ultimately determine how well athletes perform and how safely they compete in a warming world.

From Guesswork To Measuring

The next leap in athlete safety and performance is making hydration breaks smarter. Other areas of health have already undergone this transition. Continuous glucose monitors transformed diabetes care from reactive management to personalized, real-time decision making. I believe hydration is poised for a similar shift.

Wearable sweat sensors can measure fluid and electrolyte losses as they occur, providing athletes, coaches and medical staff with objective insights that a three-minute stoppage alone can't deliver. Instead of estimating hydration needs, teams can begin to quantify them.

Heat illness can escalate rapidly, and by the time symptoms become visible, the opportunity for prevention may already have passed.

FIFA's hydration break rule deserves credit. It placed a global spotlight on an issue that extends far beyond soccer. The same heat physiology that challenged athletes in Mexico City, Houston and other World Cup host cities affects millions of people every day on construction sites, oil fields, farms, factories and military bases, often with less visibility and far greater consequences.

The World Cup offered a rare opportunity to make heat and hydration part of the public conversation. For billions of viewers, hydration was no longer an invisible aspect of performance; instead, it was woven directly into the game itself. As heat becomes a defining challenge of sport, work and human performance, the organizations that move from guessing to measuring will be the ones best equipped to keep people safe, healthy and performing at their best.​
