Blue Jays could do something crazy and trade for Bo Bichette

1 hour ago 2

The Toronto Blue Jays aren't totally in the hunt, but they're close enough to the playoff picture in a messy American League to consider being a buyer at the trade deadline.

And what if they wanted to get crazy and trade to get Bo Bichette back?

It wouldn't be impossible.

The New York Mets have been awful, and they're likely to be sellers.

While Bichette signed a three-year deal there in free agency, it does have an opt-out after each season, so there's no guarantee he'll be there for the length of the contract. That could make him a trade candidate, although the deal also has an annual average value of $42 million per year, which certainly isn't cheap.

I’ll go first: Bo Bichette will be a Blue Jay again

It's certainly a fun concept, and one that would at least make one sense.

The simple case for the Blue Jays trading for Bichette would be that they'd know who they were getting. They watched him in the clubhouse and on the field for years. There'd likely be no surprises.

This is a guy who played through a brutal knee ailment during the playoffs just to be available during the World Series, and he hit a massive home run that was nearly the lasting memory of the whole postseason before the Dodgers spoiled it.

This season, Bichette started really slow, but he's up to .255 with 10 home runs through 380 at bats. He has looked more like himself the last couple of months.

The Blue Jays would have to figure out the positional stuff with Kazuma Okamoto at third base. Would Bichette be healthy and mobile enough to move back to shortstop? Or could he play second base and have Ernie Clement and Andres Gimenez split time at short?

It may not be the perfect pairing, particularly because of the money.

But if the Blue Jays get hot in the final couple weeks before the deadline, maybe they could really consider this trade that would've seemed quite far-fetched a few months ago.
