Blue Jays Cut Ties With 24-Year-Old Outfielder Shortly After Signing

The Toronto Blue Jays can point to the success of both franchise slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and former shortstop Bo Bichette as evidence that they have a strong prospect development system.

But not every notable player in the organization’s farm system has ended up achieving long-term success with the club. As talent evaluations become difficult, the Blue Jays have regularly reshuffled their lower level personnel to create opportunities for emerging prospects while moving on from players who have struggled to establish themselves.

That process continued this week when the Blue Jays officially parted ways with a young outfielder who joined the organization less than a year ago after an accomplished college career.

Toronto Blue Jays Move On From Former Ivy League Standout Shortly After Contract Decision

According to his official MiLB transaction log, the Blue Jays organization released 24-year-old outfielder Matt Scannell from the High-A affiliate Vancouver Canadians.

Scannell joined the Toronto system with an intriguing collegiate resume after starring at Princeton University, where he developed a reputation as both a productive hitter and respected clubhouse leader, then later joined Wake Forest University.

Following his signing, Princeton highlighted the excitement surrounding his professional opportunity.

"It's thrilling to see Matt get signed by the Toronto Blue Jays," Princeton’s head baseball coach Scott Bradley said last summer, according to the school. "In addition to his great leadership, he did everything for us at Princeton, and we can't wait to see what he does at the next level."

Those expectations reflected the type of player Toronto believed it was adding to its system, even if his professional tenure ultimately proved brief.

Releases at the High-A level are a common part of the professional baseball landscape, particularly as organizations continue reshaping their minor league affiliates throughout the season. Although Scannell's time in the Blue Jays organization has come to an end, his collegiate accomplishments and strong reputation suggest he'll likely receive interest as he looks for the next chapter of his professional career.
