Blue Jays Send Dalton Varsho Message As $100 Million Deal Slips Away

The Toronto Blue Jays entered the 2026 season hoping Daulton Varsho would build on his reputation as one of baseball's premier defensive outfielders while also positioning himself for a massive payday in free agency thanks to an offensive surge.

Instead, injuries and inconsistent production have complicated both his ongoing season and his long-term outlook. While Varsho remains one of the club's most valuable defenders, his path toward a nine-figure contract this winter appears far less certain than it did just a few months ago.

Toronto Blue Jays’ John Schneider Sends 6-Word Message With Daulton Varsho Seeking New Contract

As the Blue Jays head toward seller status at the upcoming trade deadline, Blue Jays manager John Schneider recently made it clear that the organization still values what Varsho brings beyond the batter's box. But the skipper hinted that Varsho might be trying to do too much as he heads toward a potentially lucrative free agency period after this season.

“I get where everyone is in their careers and (wanting) want their numbers to be a certain thing, just reminding him that his value is (slugging),” Schneider said of Varsho, according to the Toronto Star’s Gregor Chisholm. “You need to put some balls in the seats. You need to play good defense.”

Schneider's comments come as Varsho could be heading to the trade block. He’s got an expiring contract and the Blue Jays seem virtually out of playoff contention. But entering the season, it seemed as if Varsho might have been a nine-figure extension candidate for the team.

“Varsho entered spring training with the possibility of becoming the top position player available at the end of the year,” Chisholm added. “A $100-million-plus (U.S.) contract seemed within reach, possibly $150 million depending on the length of the deal. That big payday no longer appears realistic. Even if Varsho goes on a tear over the final two months, there will still be enough uncertainty that he would have to take less money or sign a one-year reset deal and re-enter the market in 2028.”

While Varsho’s offensive production hasn't matched expectations, rival clubs could still view him as an intriguing trade target because of his former potential as well as his continued defensive prowess.

“Varsho remains mired in a 24-game homer drought, and on the season he's managed just a .688 OPS with seven long balls in 91 contests, but his defensive reputation, power potential and free-agent status after this season will likely make him one of the Blue Jays' more attractive assets at the trade deadline,” CBS Sports reported last week.

Even as Schneider emphasized that Varsho appears to be overly focused on posting certain numbers at the plate this season, the team could net a significant prospect return if they make him available in the coming days. The market may no longer be projecting the blockbuster contract that once seemed inevitable for the outfielder, but he could still have a significant impact on the Blue Jays’ efforts to rebuild following a disappointing campaign.
