Brady Tkachuk trade details: Why Panthers are pairing Senators captain with brother in blockbuster deal

In the eyes of the Florida Panthers, two Tkachuks are better than one.

The Panthers are acquiring Brady Tkachuk in a blockbuster trade with the Ottawa Senators, TSN's Pierre LeBrun first reported, pairing the former Ottawa captain with his brother in a major splash.

Florida set the stage for a major move after acquiring an additional first-round pick from Seattle in a deal for Mackie Samoskevich earlier Sunday, and that pick is one of three headed to the Senators for the 26-year-old Tkachuk.

The Panthers are trading four draft picks for Tkachuk:

Panthers receive:

Senators receive:

• 2026 No. 9 pick
• 2026 No. 25 pick
• 2029 first-round pick
• 2030 second-round pick

Ottawa is receiving three first-round picks in the deal, including two in Friday's draft. The Senators will now pick ninth and 25th in addition to 32nd, where they are situated because of an NHL punishment for the mishandled Evgenii Dadonov trade with the Golden Knights in 2022.

In addition to this year's two first-round picks, the Senators received a 2029 first-round pick and a second-rounder in 2030.

Brady Tkachuk contract

Tkachuk has two years remaining on a seven-year, $57.5 million extension he signed with the Senators. The 26-year-old is set to count for $8.2 million against the cap over the next two seasons, but he will require a new deal at some point if Florida wants to keep him past 2028.

Tkachuk averaged nearly a point per game this past season, notching 59 points in 60 games, and he topped out at 83 points with the Senators in 2022-23. 

Have the Tkachuk brothers played together?

Brady and Matthew Tkachuk have only played together internationally. Brady played at Boston University before entering the NHL, but Matthew didn't play college hockey and is two years older than Brady.

At the NHL level, Brady has only played for the Senators while Matthew has split his time between the Flames and Panthers. The Tkachuks are overlapping in the NHL for the first time, but they played together during the 4 Nations Face-Off in 2025 and won gold together while representing the United States at the Winter Olympics earlier this year.
