An adorable clip of a dog in a Brazil shirt is going viral during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
It's not from this tournament, but an older match. The viral post, though, is from the opening week of the tournament.
The dog is watching on, and translated into English, the caption reads, "Oh no, gray card again."

The premise being that dogs can't tell the difference between a ref's yellow card and red card.
But on the contrary, they can.

Can dogs tell the difference between yellow and red?
Dogs can't see all colors in the same way that humans can, but yellow and red do appear different to them.
According to VCA Animal Hospitals, yellow appears pretty much the same to dogs as it does to humans.
Red is the trouble color, often looking gray to dogs.
So in a sense, the gray card caption above isn't totally wrong. If a referee pulls out his red card, a dog wouldn't sense that as red. It more shows up as one of the "colors" that a dog can't really see.
But the implication of the post is that a dog wouldn't ever know which card a ref is taking out, and that's not true. A yellow card would be yellow, and the more serious red card would be gray.

Maybe that old match the dog attended in the clip above had a lot of red (gray) cards.
More likely, though, that smart Brazilian canine understands that when he sees a yellow card, it's more of a caution, and when he sees a gray card, it's a major headline.
