The New York Giants received some encouraging news this week as running back Cam Skattebo returned to the practice field for the first time since suffering a devastating ankle injury that prematurely ended his promising rookie season.
Skattebo participated in portions of 11-on-11 drills during minicamp, marking a significant milestone in his recovery. While the workload remained limited, the fact that he was able to take part in team activities less than eight months after the injury is an encouraging sign for both the Giants and their fans.
Skattebo’s rookie campaign came to a sudden halt in October 2025 when he suffered a gruesome ankle injury against the Philadelphia Eagles. The injury included an open dislocation, a tibia fracture, and significant ligament damage that required emergency surgery and ended his season immediately.
Before the injury, however, Skattebo had emerged as one of the NFL’s most exciting young running backs. He rushed for 410 yards and five touchdowns while adding 24 receptions for 207 yards and two receiving scores in just eight games. His seven total touchdowns quickly made him a key part of New York’s offense and a fan favorite because of his physical running style and relentless energy.
Giants get encouraging update
The former Arizona State standout’s recovery has been closely followed throughout the offseason. Earlier this month, he even performed a backflip at a charity softball event, another indication that his rehabilitation was progressing ahead of schedule.
Giants coaches have remained cautious, but Skattebo’s return to football activities suggests he is on track to be available for training camp in July. If he can regain the form he displayed as a rookie, he could provide a major boost to an offense looking to take a significant step forward in 2026.
For now, simply seeing Skattebo back on the field is a victory. After months of rehabilitation, one of New York’s brightest young stars appears closer than ever to completing a remarkable comeback.
