The Boston Celtics have been active in trade discussions this offseason, including exploring a potential deal with the Milwaukee Bucks for superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. The idea of trading for the former NBA champion was perceived as a move that could strain the relationship with former Finals MVP Jaylen Brown.
However, Brad Stevens made it clear that he was consistently keeping Brown in the loop. At the end of the day, the disgruntled rumors were simply that.
“They can afford to be patient with the process, and team president Brad Stevens said on Tuesday he has been in consistent communication with Brown throughout the offseason and he can “empathize” with the difficulty of a player having his name in rumors. The assumption that Brown is ticked off because of all the chatter is not likely accurate,” Sean Deveney of Heavy reported.
While Stevens emphasized that Brown was fine with everything going on, he was still traded to the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday.
“Jaylen Brown has a new home, as the Boston Celtics agreed to send the former NBA Finals MVP to the Philadelphia 76ers in a blockbuster trade Wednesday, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania. The 76ers are sending Paul George, two first-round picks (2028, 2031) and two second-round selections (2028, 2030) to Boston to complete the deal, sources said,” ESPN wrote.
After watching the Celtics ship Brown out, teams have begun checking in on Jayson Tatum. However, the organization has made it very clear that their franchise star is untouchable.
“The Celtics received calls on Jayson Tatum over the last couple of weeks. They shut those down completely, from my understanding. But when it came to Jaylen Brown, they were open to listening, and they have been for quite some time now,” ESPN’s Shams Charania said.
Whether Boston wants to admit it or not, the relationship with Brown had been deteriorating for some time. With their stance on keeping Tatum, it becomes even clearer that they believe a championship run is still possible without Brown.
Tatum will remain in Boston unless he is traded elsewhere or requests a move himself. The Celtics remain contenders in the Eastern Conference and are not expected to blow up the entire roster.
