The Kansas City Chiefs are hoping the 2025 season was just a minor setback.
The team missed out on the playoffs for the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era, and it's safe to say they don't want a repeat. This offseason, in a bid to improve, the team brought in running back Kenneth Walker and defensive backs L'Jarius Sneed, Kader Kohou, and Alohi Gilman.
However, looking at the roster, it seems like the offense could use another playmaker or two. Luckily, there's a productive free agent still available.
Chiefs should sign Deebo Samuel for 2026
Deebo Samuel is surprisingly still a free agent despite a productive 2025 season. In 16 games with the Washington Commanders, Samuel caught 72 passes for 727 yards and five touchdowns.
Moe Moton of Bleacher Report recently identified eight moves that need to happen before Week 1. One of these moves is the Chiefs signing Samuel. Regarding this possibility, Moton offered the following:
Reid can flex his creative play-calling chops with Deebo Samuel. The versatile playmaker can pick up yards as a receiver on the perimeter or in the slot and occasionally take handoffs out of the backfield.
Last season, Samuel led the Washington Commanders in catches (72), receiving yards (727) and touchdown receptions (five). He can match or top those numbers in Kansas City's pass-centric offense.
As Moton mentioned, Samuel would seemingly thrive with an offensive mastermind like Andy Reid. Samuel's best seasons came under a similar-minded coach in Kyle Shanahan with the San Francisco 49ers.
Plus, the Commanders were bad last year, so I'm sure Samuel would love to play for a contender once again. Playing with Mahomes is also a major draw for obvious reasons.
Samuel is probably past his prime, but he's still a productive player. Samuel's best season came back in 2021, when he made the Pro Bowl after catching 77 passes for 1,405 yards, and also rushing for 365 yards and eight scores. Other than an injury-shortened 2020, Samuel has had at least 600 receiving yards in every season.
From a roster perspective, Samuel would be a perfect fit. The Chiefs' current top receivers are a guy coming off a 30-day jail stint, and another guy who is often hurt. Samuel would be a reliable piece for Mahomes and good insurance in the event Rashee Rice or Xavier Worthy are out.
