If the Washington Commanders aren’t going to make a serious effort to strengthen their wide receiver room, they should at least attempt to tighten up their edge rushing corps before it’s too late.
Although Washington generated a decent number of sacks a season ago (42), its pass-rush win rate (36%) ranked toward the bottom of the league (18). Sports Illustrated’s Karl Rasmussen recently named the Commanders as one of the best fits for a former Dallas Cowboys sack leader this offseason.
“The Commanders need a buff on the edge of their defensive line after opting not to re-sign Miller,” Rasmussen wrote Friday, “(Jadeveon) Clowney could be a low-risk option for Washington in an area of need. He led the Cowboys in sacks last season with 8.5, while adding 10 QB hits and 12 tackles for loss, despite only playing in 13 games.”
“Clowney is 33 and has bounced around the league over the past half a decade, though he has generally been productive regardless of what team he’s playing for. “
Clowney was one of the few bright spots on a Cowboys defense that struggled mightily to pressure opposing quarterbacks, record sacks, and force opponents out of their comfort zone.
While 8.5 sacks may not move the needle for some Commanders fans, it’s clear the three-time Pro Bowler is still a respectable pass rusher in his early 30s despite failing to perform like a former No. 1 overall pick for most of his career.
If Washington could receive similar, if not better, production from Clowney in 2026-27, its defense could be much improved.
