Cubs quietly sign All-Star reliever who posted a 2.17 ERA in 2025

The Chicago Cubs quietly signed an All-Star reliever last week. 

The left-hander pitched for the NL Central club last season and posted a 2.17 ERA in 57 appearances. 

Because the Los Angeles Angels released the 37-year-old veteran, the Cubs can give him another shot with the organization. 

According to Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors, Drew Pomeranz recently agreed to a minor league deal with the Cubs. 

On Sunday, Pomeranz threw a scoreless inning with two strikeouts at Triple-A Iowa. 

"Given the patchwork nature of the relief group, there could be an opportunity for Pomeranz in the big leagues before long if he can string together a few strong appearances in Des Moines," Adams wrote. 

Pomeranz had a resurgent year with the Cubs in 2025, striking out 57 batters in 49.2 innings.

It was his first Major League action since 2021 with the San Diego Padres due to a torn flexor tendon and several setbacks in his recovery. 

Signing Pomeranz could be a very smart move by the Cubs, who have suffered many injuries to their pitching staff.
