‘Cyberpunk 2077’ Is Doing 70,000 Steam Players A Night, Four Years Later

I have come to the conclusion that Cyberpunk 2077 is my favorite video game of all time. I do not say that lightly, and it appears some people have also figured out just how good the game has become. As such, Cyberpunk 2077 is putting up extremely impressive numbers for a not-live, four year-old single player game.

As it stands, Cyberpunk is currently peaking at between 60-70,000 concurrent players a night on Steam, numbers some actually live ongoing games would kill for. CDPR’s Pawel Sasko notes the increase over the past month specifically in the wake of Update 2.2, which was mostly about fun little additions like a better photo mode and more car and player customization. Though looking at the data, the most recent rise seems to have come in early November, and the game is up almost 50% since then.

But what’s actually crazy is when you zoom all the way out. Cyberpunk 2077 has actually added to its baseline playerbase year after year. Yes, obviously its peak was at launch in December 2020, which brought a million concurrent players, but it crashed after those severe launch issues. But the overall data is…kind of wild:

• 2021 – Usually between 15-20,000 concurrent players
• 2022 – Usually between 18-25,000 concurrent players
• 2023 – Usually between 30-35,000 concurrent players (huge spike to 274,000 for Phantom Liberty launch in September)
• 2024 – Usually between 40-50,000 concurrent players

And now here in late 2024/early 2025 we’re pushing 60-70,000 concurrents nightly. This is of course also without data on console. But on Xbox we can see it’s the 24th most-played game on the system right now, without even being on sale.

For context, we can look at some other popular games. Elden Ring, for instance is doing similarly 75,000 players a night, but that came out two and a half years ago, and just had a major expansion in June 2024.

The gold standard in games retaining playerbases in this genre is Baldur’s Gate 3, which still puts up over 100,000 players nightly, though it released just over a year and a half ago. Again, Cyberpunk is now four full years old (which is a little hard to believe)

This is without question one of the biggest turnarounds in video game history. You can argue whether or not it’s better than FFXIV or No Man’s Sky, but it’s certainly part of that epic trio. There is almost nothing bad you can say about Cyberpunk 2077 in its current form which as undergone just massively sweeping changes and introduced a DLC that is arguably the best part of the game now. Clearly the game has a long life ahead of it, and I understand why CDPR wants to develop the sequel alongside The Witcher 4 rather than completely after it. But yes, if you’re not a convert yet, go play it, you won’t regret it.
