Head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns will welcome one of the nation’s top prospects to Austin earlier than expected, as five-star cornerback John Meredith III elected to reclassify and sign with Texas on Thursday after being ruled ineligible for his senior season earlier this summer.

— Texas Football (@TexasFootball) July 23, 2026Meredith, who was previously the No. 4 overall recruit in the Class of 2027 according to 247Sports, transferred from Euless Trinity H.S. (Euless) to North Crowley H.S. (Fort Worth) ahead of the 2026 season. However, the UIL State Executive Committee determined that the move was athletically motivated, preventing Meredith from competing at North Crowley and leaving him with limited options heading into his final year of high school football.
Rather than sit out the season or pursue an opportunity in another state, Meredith chose to reclassify to the Class of 2026 and begin his college career early. The move comes shortly after Meredith committed to the Longhorns on June 19, choosing Texas over Texas A&M and several other major programs.
Meredith possesses several traits that have solidified his status as one of the premier defensive back prospects in the country. According to Rivals, Meredith’s “combination of stature, length, and athleticism” draws comparisons to two-time All-Pro Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner, emphasizing “similarities between the two in terms of physical traits, play style, and ultimate ceiling.”
Sarkisian confirmed Meredith’s arrival and praised the young cornerback’s skill set during his press availability at SEC Football Media Days in Tampa, describing the 18-year-old as possessing “great length, great speed, and tremendous man-to-man ability” and “all [of] the attributes you want in a defensive back.”
Meredith’s decision to reclassify gives him an early opportunity to develop at Texas as the Longhorns seek a return to title contention in 2026.
