But before you make the leap forward to your next premium domain acquisition in this new year, there are some helpful pieces of advice I can offer to you—five of them, to be exact—that will help you become a master of the art of the domain name deal.
So before you run, walk, and along the way, take a gander at these five critical things you should know before you hire a domain expert.
1. Assess Their Experience
Experience really is everything here. Without a doubt, there are plenty of people who dive into this industry every year as a new career choice. Honestly, though, do you really want someone who is wet behind the ears managing your next domain name acquisition?
Do yourself a favor here and spend some time researching the domain broker before they make money on your next transaction to ensure they are more than qualified to meet your needs.
Ask these important questions along the way:
• How long have you been a broker?
• What type of annual volume do you handle?
• How does your process work?
• What experience do you have?
• Can I see your portfolio?
2. Learn About Their Appraisal Process
Going about assessing domain name value can be tricky, and there are differences that you will find between different brokers and how they go about assessing domains.
Naturally, take the time to conduct due diligence here and learn about their appraisal process. From my experience, I can attest that the three most important factors in any domain name appraisal include:
• History of the domain, including traffic, analytics and sales.
• SEO value, including built-in traffic and commercial intent potential.
• Brandability of the domain as part of a business or a personal brand.
3. Research Their Track Record
Would you want a painter with no proven track record painting the outside of your house? What about a heart surgeon who has yet to complete his first solo surgery? The same goes for the experience level of the broker that you choose.

My last piece of advice is to inquire about specialty skills. For example, let’s say you want to protect your business or personal brand name (especially for a celebrity brand), you’re going to need to consider doing a stealth acquisition.
