EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ — Free-scoring France face Sweden in a mouthwatering Round of 32 clash between European sides at the World Cup.

Les Bleus were in scintillating form as they romped to group wins over Senegal, Iran and Norway.

Kylian Mbappe is already up to four goals for the tournament for the 2022 finalists. Ousmane Dembele scored a hat-trick last time out.

Sweden have been involved in action-packed games since landing in North America. Their 5-1 win over Tunisia was followed by defeat by the same margin against the Netherlands. Anthony Elanga's stunning goal in a 1-1 draw with Japan sealed their passage to the knockouts.

Prematch

4:30 p.m. — Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele may not be teammates at the club level anymore, but the two still have an excellent rapport on the pitch for the national team. They have combined for eight goals (split evenly) and three assists. Will they add to their tally today?

4:15 p.m. — A key today for Sweden will be Alexander Isak, who had a difficult, injury-stricken season with Liverpool but has seemingly come back to full fitness here at the World Cup. If Sweden are to get an upset today, Graham Potter will need Isak to provide danger in front of goal!

4 p.m. — Lineups are in! For France, there are some interesting changes as Didier Deschamps makes two alterations to his regular starting lineup. Bradley Barcola comes in for Desire Doue for the first time this tournament, while Lucas Digne starts at left-back for Theo Hernandez.

For Sweden, Lucas Bergvall starts for the first time, with Isak Hien injured in their group stage finale against Japan. That moves Victor Lindelof back to the defensive line, while Bergvall slots into midfield.

3:30 p.m. — Hydration breaks have been largely ridiculed throughout the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but they will be necessary today. Temperatures are already over 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and likely to remain there by kickoff and through much of the game.

Thankfully, the heat dome headed for this area with temperatures above 100 have held off just long enough — that will be taking over the east coast for the next five days — but it's still quite toasty in the MetLife Stadium sun.

3 p.m. — Last time France played in New Jersey, they were exceedingly poor in the first half against Senegal as Adrien Rabiot was lost in midfield, often drifting out on the wing. Didier Deschamps loves his defensive possession, but this was a net negative for France, and something they will want to avoid today.

Here's how failed tactics have had a butterfly effect for France today vs. Senegal:

- Tchouameni forced to shoulder all the progressional load
- Dembele forced to drop deep to help

2 p.m. — The winner of this match will take on Paraguay, who stunned European elites Germany on penalties last night in easily the most stunning upset of this tournament so far. Sweden goalkeeper Jacob Zetterstrom, who plays for Championship club Derby County in England, will be hoping to take inspiration from the incredible performance of Orlando Gill who triumphed with Paraguay.

1 p.m. — The Golden Boot race at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been outstanding, with Lionel Messi leading on six goals while France teammates Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele are on four each. Two teammates gunning for the Golden Boot can often times hurt both, as they poach goals off one another, but it makes for a thrilling and exciting chase indeed! Don't forget Vinicius Jr and Erling Haaland too, who are both also on four goals too.

12 p.m. — Hello and welcome to the Sporting News' live coverage of France vs. Sweden from MetLife Stadium. It's not been a great Round of 32 for European nations so far, but one of them has to progress here!
