Foxborough, Mass. — Germany faces a daunting potential Round of 16 matchup with France, but first, upset-minded Paraguay stands in the way.
Paraguay showcased plenty of flaws in the group stage, allowing four goals in a loss to the United States before picking up a win over Turkey despite being heavily out-shot. A draw against Australia in the finale didn't say much about either team, as each seemed content to settle for the tie and advance.
Whether Paraguay has what it takes to slow down Germany is a mystery entering Monday's match. The German squad looked unstoppable against Curacao in its group stage opener but needed some late heroics to beat Ivory Coast days later. Germany enters the knockout stage off a loss to Ecuador, but that game didn't mean anything to a team that had already won its group.
Suddenly, everything is on the line again. Germany is aiming to rediscover the goal-scoring momentum it found against Curacao, while Paraguay can shake up the bracket and make its first Round of 16 appearance since 2010 with an upset in New England.
