After a 12 year run on the platform, the Gilmore Girls have left Netflix behind. The announcement came via Netflix’s social media, which posted: "It's a show? It's a lifestyle. It's a religion. We are sorry to say that Gilmore Girls Seasons 1-7 will be leaving Netflix in the US on June 30. Raising a cup of coffee to every fan who visited Stars Hollow with us."
The departure may not come as a complete shock to eagle-eyed fans, seeing as how reports dating back to 2022 indicated Netflix’s licensing agreement for the series was set to expire in 2026. Netflix did not give a reason for the decision.
Where To Watch Gilmore Girls After It Leaves Netflix
The good news is that Stars Hollow is not going dark. All seven seasons will be moving to Amazon Prime Video, according to confirmation from Entertainment Weekly. The show is also available to stream on both Hulu and Disney+, and has been since December 2024. For those without either subscription, the series is also available for purchase on Apple TV and Fandango At Home.
What Happens To Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life
For the fans who were not shocked by the 2016 Netflix revival miniseries, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, is still on Netflix remain on Netflix. This works because the four-part series was a Netflix original production rather than a licensed acquisition, which is why it is not subject to the same licensing expiration affecting the original run. It’s still not forever though, because Warner Bros still technically owns the franchise, and accounting for the usual ten-year licensing period, The revival starred Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel reprising their roles as Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, set nine years after the original series across four 90-minute episodes.
What Is Gilmore Girls
Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, Gilmore Girls ran for seven seasons from 2000 to 2007 on The WB and later The CW. The series follows Lorelai Gilmore, played by Lauren Graham, and her daughter Rory, played by Alexis Bledel, navigating life, love, and an extraordinary volume of coffee in the small Connecticut town of Stars Hollow. The ensemble cast includes Melissa McCarthy, Scott Patterson, Kelly Bishop, Keiko Agena, and Yanic Truesdale. Netflix added the series to its catalogue in 2014, one year before it began developing the revival, and the show has since garnered a new generation of fans on the platform.
Is Another Gilmore Girls Revival Happening
While Sherman-Palladino confirmed there are no official talks about another sequel series, her producing partner and husband Daniel Palladino revealed the couple are always discussing a future for Gilmore Girls, noting: "We never thought that the Netflix movies would happen." Lauren Graham has also publicly pitched a Christmas special, which Sherman-Palladino told E! News she thought was "very cute," per E! Online.
