Book lovers and vertical drama addicts, I have something for both of you today! It turns out, quite a few of our favorite micro dramas actually started as bestselling romance novels, and seeing those stories come to life in bite-sized episodes is surprisingly fun.

So, if you're looking for your next obsession, here are 8 vertical dramas based on popular books that are ABSOLUTELY worth watching.

1. Bound by Honor on ReelShort

This one is for anyone, like me, who enjoys a full-blown mafia romance with high stakes and even higher tension. Aria Scuderi, a sheltered Chicago mafia princess, steps in to marry Luca Vitiello—the 'ruthless' heir to the New York mafia—to protect her younger sister from being forced into the alliance. What follows is Aria being thrown into a completely new world where Luca’s reputation for brutality is very real, and their marriage starts off more like a power move than anything else. But despite how it begins, Luca makes one thing very clear—Aria is his, and anyone who crosses that line is not walking away easily. Also, if this feels familiar, that’s because it’s based on the popular novel by Cora Reilly, the first book in the Born in Blood Mafia Chronicles series.

2. Things I Wanted to Say on ReelShort

If you've read Monica Murphy's novel, you'll probably be excited to know this is a vertical drama adaptation—and if you haven't, don't worry, you can still jump right in. The story follows Summer, a quiet, introverted girl whose biggest mistake is accidentally letting her private diary fall into the hands of Whit Lancaster, the untouchable golden boy of her elite prep school. Unfortunately for Summer, Whit also happens to be the same guy who's been making her life miserable for years. From that moment on, things spiral fast. Whit suddenly knows all of Summer's deepest thoughts and secrets, and instead of leaving her alone, the two become tangled up in a messy game of power, tension, and undeniable chemistry. The more they push each other's buttons, the harder it becomes to tell where the hate ends and the feelings begin. Before long, all that arguing starts looking a lotttttt like flirting.

3. Dark Notes on ReelShort

If you've read Pam Godwin's Dark Notes, you'll be happy to know it has a vertical drama adaptation—and yes, it's every bit as intense as you'd expect. The story follows Ivory, a gifted piano prodigy who's trying to make it through one of the country's most prestigious conservatories despite struggling financially. Things take a complicated turn when she catches the attention of her new piano professor, Emeric Marceaux. What starts as a mentor-student relationship quickly becomes something much harder for either of them to ignore. Of course, keeping a relationship like that under wraps is easier said than done. Between classmates who are more than happy to judge, an abusive family that makes Ivory's life even harder, and the constant risk of their secret coming to light, the stakes just keep getting higher.

I also loved that beneath Emeric's cold, intimidating exterior, he's fiercely protective of Ivory, especially when she's targeted by bullies.

4. The Imperfect Marriage on ReelShort

The words "Accidentally marries her cheating ex's dad" were all I needed to hear before adding this to my watchlist. Based on L. Steele's novel, this drama follows Vivian, whose life completely falls apart after her fiancé cheats on her with her maid of honor just minutes before they're supposed to get married. Desperate to pay for her father's medical treatment, she agrees to a two-week contract marriage with billionaire Quentin Davenport. The only tiny problem? Quentin is her ex-fiancé's father. What starts as a purely business arrangement quickly becomes a whole lot messier. While Felix continues doing everything he can to embarrass Vivian, Quentin keeps stepping in to defend her, and before long, their fake marriage starts feeling a little too real.

I don't know what it is about the fake marriage trope, but throw in a protective silver fox billionaire and enough family drama to keep everyone on edge, and I'm invested like my life depends on it. Yikes.

The funny part is that Sadie couldn't care less about his celebrity status, and that's exactly what catches Jax's attention. As the two grow closer, Sadie is pulled into a world of paparazzi and all the mess that comes with dating someone who's constantly in the spotlight.

6. The Cursed Alpha's Mate on ReelShort

Based on Cricket Colson's novel, The Cursed Alpha's Mate follows Shay, whose plans for a very important night are ruined when she catches her boyfriend cheating on her. Heartbroken and determined not to spend the evening feeling sorry for herself, she heads out with her best friend and makes a spur-of-the-moment decision that ends up changing her life completely. Instead of finding a rebound, she finds Alpha Mal Haywood, a powerful werewolf who immediately recognizes her as his fated mate. As if navigating a forbidden relationship between a human and a werewolf wasn't complicated enough, Mal is also racing against time. Based on Christine Bell's novel, Fix You is one of those dramas that had me rooting for the main couple almost immediately. The story follows Olivia, whose life seems to be falling apart all at once. Her family is struggling financially, her dream of going to college is slipping away, and to make matters even worse, her high school sweetheart has become abusive. Just when things couldn't seem any bleaker, she crosses paths with Sebastian "Bash" McDaniels, an up-and-coming boxer who's carrying plenty of baggage of his own. After Bash steps in to protect Olivia from her ex, the two slowly grow closer. But with Bash chasing his boxing dreams and Olivia trying to rebuild her life, it's clear that falling in love isn't going to be the easiest part of their journey.

Some books just feel like they were made to be adapted into vertical dramas, and Vicious is definitely one of them. If you've read L.J. Shen's novel, you'll probably want to add this adaptation to your watchlist. The story follows Emilia, whose life is completely upended after Vicious, a ruthless billionaire, bullies her out of town and leaves her with nothing. Forced to rebuild her life from scratch, she spends the next decade trying to move on from the man who broke her. Then, just when she thinks she's finally escaped her past, Vicious walks back into her life with an offer she can't afford to turn down. Emilia desperately needs the job, but working for the man who ruined her life is easier said than done. The more time they spend together, the more obvious it becomes that Vicious isn't just back because of guilt.
