It's the kind of news that can make an ordinary Thursday in July turn into a defining day for the upcoming college basketball season.
Marcus Spears Jr. is reclassifying from the Class of 2027 to the Class of 2026, and he's committing to Texas. That means he'll play for the Longhorns in the season ahead.
And yeah, Spears can play.
He was the No. 1 overall player in the Class of 2027 rankings before his decision to reclass.
— ESPN (@espn) July 9, 2026Yes, Spears Jr. is the son of the ESPN analyst (and former Dallas Cowboys first-round pick) by the same name.
But he's got his talents working on the court, not the gridiron.
How good is Marcus Spears Jr?
In short: really, really good.
Spears Jr. projects as a surefire one-and-done prospect who will soon be in the NBA.
First, he'll get a chance to impact college basketball games all over the court with his length, athleticism, shooting, skill -- and all while doing it as a lefty.
Spears Jr. is one of those guys who can do everything on the court, and here's a good look at it:

— NBA Future Starts Now (@nbafuturenow) October 4, 2025It's also worth noting: Cooper Flagg reclassified a year forward, like this, and that worked out just fine for him.
It'll probably work out great for Spears and the Longhorns, too, but maybe not for teams going up against them in the season ahead.
