How Michael Kim joined Jim Furyk, Scottie Scheffler as golfers to score historic 59 on PGA Tour

Michael Kim joined golf history on Friday afternoon, becoming just the 15th player to shoot a sub-60 round in PGA Tour history.

Kim made history at the 3M Open in Minnesota, using a score of 12 under on the day to increase his score to 14 under for the tournament, putting him in the lead after two days. Kim has produced solid results this year, with his best finish being a runner-up finish at the Valero Texas Open, but missed the cut in each of his last three starts.

Kim's 59 came a year after the last sub-60 round, which belonged to Jake Knapp, and is the fourth sub-60 round in the last three years. Here's a look at how Kim made history.

Michael Kim 59 score

During the second round of the 3M Open on Friday, Michael Kim became the latest golfer to shoot a 59 on the PGA Tour. He did so with an impressive putting performance, using just 21 putts across 18 holes, including a 24-footer to secure the score.

Kim had exactly 12 birdies and six pars, avoiding bogeys on the day while also not needing any eagles to shoot 59. He also shot exactly -6 on both the front and back nine, a pretty even round all together.

On the 18th hole, Kim new what was at stake and wanted to be aggressive in trying to get the birdie to close his round.

Kim's scorecard includes five-straight birdies from holes 3-7, which put him on the radar for a special day. Then, after parring three of the first four holes on the back nine, he needed to birdie each hole remaining to score the 59, which is exactly what he did.

Lowest golf score on PGA Tour

Jim Furyk owns the record for lowest score on the PGA Tour, as he is the only golfer to shoot a 58 in a tournament round. Furyk did that in the final round of the 2016 Travelers Championship on a Par 70, so his score that day was a -12.

Of the players to shoot a 59, four of them did so on a Par 72, putting their scores at -13, one shot better than Furyk's -12.

Golfers to shoot 59 on PGA Tour

There have been 15 players to shoot a sub-60 round on the PGA Tour, with Kim joining the list on Friday. Furyk is the only golfer to show up on the list twice, as he also shot a 59 at the 2013 BMW Championship, and there have been 16 total scores of exactly 59.

Of the 16 sub-60 scores, four were at 13 under, seven were at 12 under and five were at 11 under. The most recent 13-under round came in 2017, when Adam Hadwin shot a 59 at the American Express tournament.
