New features are coming to Apple AirPods, including custom EQ settings. Here’s what you need to do to install the software. As the next generation of iPhone software, iOS 27, reaches its second developer beta, Apple has released new beta firmware for Apple AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2 and — for the first time — AirPods Max 2.

New AirPods Features Coming With iOS 27

Top of the list is Custom EQ, which is a first. Apple has up until now focused on its own sound profiles. Adjustable EQ is coming and lets users change the lows, mids and highs.

There’s also a redesigned settings menu on the iPhone for AirPods with separated menus. Other improvements include Precision Finding for the AirPods Pro 3 charging case using a compatible Apple Watch and syncing for GymKit, so compatible gym equipment can take on board the heart rate data collected on AirPods Pro 3. Oh, and the long-awaited Siri AI will work on connected AirPods through the companion iPhone.

How To Install Beta Firmware On AirPods

First of all, you need to have the developer beta of iOS 27 on your companion iPhone, or the equivalent developer beta of iPadOS 27 or macOS 27 if you’re connecting your AirPods to an iPad or Mac to do the installation.

You can read how to install this on an iPhone here. But note that while anyone can get the developer beta, and it’s free, you would be well-advised not to put the software on your main iPhone — this is beta software and problems will arise.

Warning: This Is Beta Software

There is also a risk putting beta software on your AirPods. Again, if you have compatible AirPods which are not the ones you listen to every day, you should put the firmware on those instead.

How To Install Using iPhone Or iPad

With the developer beta installed, connect your AirPods to the device. Then, go to Settings and tap the dedicated AirPods section right at the top of the screen. From here, scroll to the bottom where you’ll find AirPods Beta Updates. Swipe this to on.

Alternatively, from Settings go to Bluetooth and when you find the AirPods, tap the i in a circle next to it. Again, you’ll find AirPods Beta Updates and can turn this on.

The next part of the process simply requires patience. Put the AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2 or AirPods Pro 3 in their charging case and nearby the paired device. For AirPods Max, place them into the Smart Case, plug into charge and leave near the device they’re paired to.
