I'm Truly Baffled By How These 18 Celebrities' Careers Survived Leaked Audio, Videos, And Texts This Brutal

1 day ago 3

Warning: This post contains mentions of abuse, sexual assault, and violence.

Celebrity scandals with actual footage, audio, texts, or receipts are basically a trainwreck you can't look away from. And unfortunately, there are a lot of them. Even more unfortunately, a shocking number of those celebrities still came out the other side booked, busy, famous, and very, very rich. Here are the 18 brutal celeb leaks that I still can't believe weren't career-ending:

1. In 2009, Christian Bale's prestigious actor image took a brutal hit to the ego when audio leaked from the set of Terminator Salvation... He could be heard screaming at cinematographer Shane Hurlbut after Hurlbut reportedly walked into his eyeline during a scene. The rant was not some quick little snap, either — Bale berated him, threatened to quit, and had a meltdown. Because Bale was already seen as one of Hollywood's most serious and committed actors, the leak instantly turned his "intensity" into a meme and a very uncomfortable behind-the-scenes peek. Honestly, the scandal barely slowed him down as he went on to win an Oscar for The Fighter, star in manyyyy more major films, and remain one of the most respected actors of his generation.

Bale publicly apologized on a Los Angeles radio station, KROQ, and called the rant "inexcusable," adding that he acted like a "punk."

2. In 2013, Reese Witherspoon's "America's sweetheart" image got a very messy reality check when police dashcam footage and arrest details showed her arguing with an officer during her husband Jim Toth's DUI arrest in Atlanta. Reese was arrested for disorderly conduct after repeatedly getting out of the car, but the part that really stuck was the "Do you know who I am?" energy of it all. It was basically two minutes of a rich-person panic spiraling on the side of the road 😭. Though she apologized well enough that the scandal became a public learning lesson instead of a career-ruining disaster.

Reese apologized and said on Good Morning America that she panicked, said "all kinds of crazy things," and was deeply embarrassed by how she spoke to the officer.

3. In 2022, Adam Levine's married rock-star and family-man image got dragged through every social media platform possible when model Sumner Stroh posted alleged DMs from him and claimed they had a year-long affair. The reason the scandal really exploded was because the messages were so weirdly corny, and sooo many women came forward exposing their weird screenshots from him, too. He even asked Sumner if he could name his unborn baby after her 😟. As more and more women came forward, the Maroon 5 singer just kept performing, with his marriage to Behati Prinsloo also continuing controversially.

On Instagram, Adam denied having an affair but admitted: "I used poor judgment in speaking with anyone other than my wife in ANY kind of flirtatious manner."

4. The Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian, and Kanye West phone-call saga was basically the celebrity-receipts war to end all celebrity-receipts wars. After Kanye released his song "Famous," Taylor objected to the lyric in which he said he made her famous. Kim ended up posting clips from a recorded phone call that appeared to show Taylor approving at least part of the song, which led to a full public takedown and made Taylor look like a liar. Years later, a longer version of the call leaked, and the narrative shifted again because it appeared to support Taylor's claim that she had not been told about the exact "I made that bitch famous" line. They all seemed to have moved on from this, but Kim has never fully owned up to her smear campaign against Taylor.

Taylor came out years later, saying that the longer leak proved she had been telling the truth. And in a Time interview, she admitted, "That took me down psychologically to a place I've never been before."

5. In 2020, Tom Cruise's intense movie-star image had a rude awakening when leaked audio from the set of Mission: Impossible 7 caught him screaming at crew members over alleged COVID-safety violations. The public reaction was pretty split: some people thought the rant was abusive and power-trippy, while others praised him as one of the few celebrities taking workplace safety seriously. Either way, the audio was still very much Tom Cruise absolutely losing it on set and threatening firings, but somehow, the leak did not damage his career in any lasting way. His Top Gun: Maverick victory lap only confirmed that Tom is slightly terrifying but undeniably keeping blockbusters alive.

Tom later stood by the moment in an interview with Empire magazine, saying there was a lot at stake and that he cared about protecting the production.

6. In 2009, Tiger Woods was a spotless, sponsor-safe, family man whose image was shattered so brutally that it basically became the celebrity cheating scandal blueprint. He was known as the disciplined golf legend with massive endorsements, but then came allegations of multiple affairs, alleged texts, and the infamous voicemail that made the scandal a public unraveling in real time. The receipts were detrimental because they not only revealed cheating, but they also destroyed the image that had made him one of the most marketable athletes alive. Sponsors backed away, his marriage ended, and he became a punchline for years — but in the end, Tiger rebuilt enough goodwill that his 2019 Masters win was treated as one of the greatest comeback moments in sports history.

In a televised apology, Tiger admitted he had cheated, said he was "irresponsible and selfish," and described his behavior as a failure to live up to his own values.

7. Chrissy Teigen's funny "queen of Twitter" image fell fast when resurfaced tweets and alleged DMs involving Courtney Stodden made her look a lot less charming. Courtney, who was heavily mocked as a teenager after marrying actor Doug Hutchison when they were 16 and he was 50, later spoke about the abuse they received online and specifically called out Chrissy for past messages telling them to die. Suddenly, what had once been seen as Chrissy being edgy and savage looked just plain mean (especially because Courtney was so young and already being exploited). Chrissy lost the public's affection and brand opportunities, but she later returned to social media, continued publishing lifestyle and cookbook content, and slowly crept back into the celebrity ecosystem.

Chrissy publicly apologized on Twitter, saying, "I'm mortified and sad at who I used to be. I was an insecure, attention-seeking troll."

8. David O. Russell's serious-filmmaker image got a chaotic behind-the-scenes reality check when leaked footage from I Heart Huckabees showed him screaming at Lily Tomlin on set. The clip showed a director losing his temper, yelling profanities, and knocking papers around as the room turned tense, to say the least. Hollywood has always told stories about "difficult geniuses," but the footage made Russell's difficult reputation feel a lot more confirmed. Although his career kept climbing as he went on to direct The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook, and American Hustle, earning major Oscar attention and continuing to work with huge stars.

In a Movieline interview, Lily said she would work with him again and that she adores and loves him. David told The New York Times that they "love each other" and "would work together tomorrow."

9. In 2021, Morgan Wallen's rising country-star image was exposed by a video that you'd expect to be career-ruining. Footage published by TMZ showed him using a racial slur outside his Nashville home, and the backlash came quickly. His label suspended him, radio stations pulled his songs, and major industry spaces distanced themselves from him. On paper, it looked like it would derail his career, but the commercial aftermath was quite shocking. He kept performing, fans continued rallying around him, and Morgan ended up becoming one of the biggest country artists in the world.

Morgan apologized and told Good Morning America that, "There are no excuses to use this type of language, ever. I want to sincerely apologize for using the word. I promise to do better." In a separate apology video, he told fans to stop defending him.

10. Jonah Hill's sensitive, chill-guy image got hit in 2023 when his ex-girlfriend Sarah Brady shared alleged text messages that she said came from him. The texts appeared to show him listing "boundaries" around things like surfing with men, posting swimsuit photos, and maintaining certain friendships, which immediately sparked a huge debate over whether they were actual boundaries or controlling behavior. The alleged messages were very "therapy coded" terminology-wise, but just felt very manipulative. Still, the scandal did not erase his career, but it did unfold into a broader conversation about dating, control, and psychology.

To make all this even more ironic, just months earlier, Jonah had released Stutz, a Netflix documentary about his therapist and mental health journey...

11. In 2001, Winona Ryder's cool, mysterious '90s icon image shifted when she was arrested for shoplifting at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills. Surveillance footage, court coverage, and endless headlines turned it into one of the defining celebrity scandals of the early 2000s. Winona was the beloved star of Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and Girl, Interrupted — and not someone people would ever expect to be accused of walking out of a luxury department store with thousands of dollars in merchandise. She was convicted of theft-related charges, sentenced to probation/community service, and stepped away from Hollywood's eye for years. But her image recovered after her Stranger Things comeback, which turned her into a beloved icon for an entirely new generation.

In an interview with Esquire, Winona said that she "checked out" after the scandal and stepped away from Hollywood.

12. Doja Cat's career has survived so many internet cancellations, but her 2020 chat-room controversy was one of the first times her "rising pop-star" image reallyyy got tested. Old footage and posts circulated online accusing her of participating in white supremacist chat rooms. On top of that, people criticized her old song "Dindu Nuffin," which is a racist phrase mocking Black victims of police brutality. The backlash hit right as Doja was becoming a mainstream icon, so she addressed the controversy, denied taking part in racist conversations, apologized to people she offended, and said she should not have been on some of those chat-room sites. Then her career not only survived but exploded, with even more hits, awards, attention, and, of course, controversy.

On Instagram, Doja wrote, "I've used public chat rooms to socialize since I was a child [...] I shouldn't have been on some of those chat room sites, but I personally have never been involved in any racist conversations. I'm sorry to everyone I offended."

13. In 1995, Hugh Grant's charming British rom-com image face-planted when he was arrested in Los Angeles for lewd conduct with sex worker Divine Brown. He had been dating Elizabeth Hurley for around eight years, and the timing could not have been worse, as he had just become the dream man in Four Weddings and a Funeral and was promoting Nine Months. But, to give credit where credit is due: Hugh did something weirdly effective — he went on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, immediately got asked the obvious "what the hell were you thinking?" question, and admitted he had done something stupid instead of trying to spin it into a misunderstanding. Somehow, that blunt humility helped him survive, and he went on to star in Notting Hill, Bridget Jones's Diary, About a Boy, and Love Actually.

14. In 2023, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis's "couple goals" image tanked when their "positive" character letters for their former That '70s Show costar Danny Masterson became public after he was convicted of raping two women. People couldn't believe they would do this after spending years being publicly outspoken in anti-sex-trafficking and anti-child-exploitation advocacy through Thorn. The couple ended up making a "defensive" apology video that made things worse, causing them to step away from their roles at Thorn. Butttt, they're still getting work in Hollywood, so it seems like they're doing just fine.

In the apology video, Ashton and Mila claim "the letters were not written to question the legitimacy or the validity of the jury's ruling." They also said, "We support victims. We have done this historically through our work and will continue to do so in the future."

15. In 2007, Alec Baldwin's public image was intimately exposed when TMZ released a voicemail he had left for his 11-year-old daughter, Ireland. It was a private parental meltdown made public, and the audio was so harsh that it became one of the most infamous celebrity voicemail scandals ever. The leak hit especially hard because it pulled the public into his bitter custody battle with Kim Basinger and showed a side of him that felt cruel, uncontrolled, and deeply uncomfortable to hear. But Alec's career did not end; he continued starring on 30 Rock, won acclaim for his comedy, hosted major shows, and later became a regular on Saturday Night Live. The voicemail remained infamous, but I guess Hollywood kept picking up the phone. 😬

On The View, Alec apologized, calling it "improper and inappropriate," but added, "Everyone in my life who knows me knows that I have a great relationship with my daughter."

16. In 1988, Rob Lowe's "Brat Pack" heartthrob image was rocked by a sex tape scandal, but this one was not just embarrassing — it was disturbing. A tape surfaced involving Lowe and two women, one of whom was reportedly 16, turning him from a rising movie star into a national creep overnight. Decades later, he and his friends openly joked about the scandal during his 2016 Comedy Central Roast, focusing on the gap between his heartthrob image and his real-life persona. Somehow, Lowe's image had recovered enough to sit there, take the hits, remain a respected TV star on The West Wing and Parks and Recreation, and live a happy life that made the scandal feel like just a bump in the road.

On The Jess Cagle Show, Rob claimed, "It's one of the reasons why I got sober. I woke up one day, and I was like, 'What am I doing with my life?' I'm 29 years in and, like, people talk, but it's the best thing that ever happened to me."

17. Mel Gibson's public image survival is one of the most shocking on this list because the receipts were disturbingly hateful and seemingly career-detonating. In 2006, his DUI arrest became a massive scandal after reports said he made antisemitic remarks to a law enforcement officer, and years later, leaked recordings allegedly captured him making racist, misogynistic, and abusive comments toward his ex, Oksana Grigorieva. He has had a string of public controversies that make his movie-star image feel like a complete lie. For a while, it seemed like the industry had finally shut the door on him. Yet somehow, the door reopened: Gibson later directed Hacksaw Ridge, earned major awards and Oscar nominations, and continued to get acting/directing work.

Mel released a statement apologizing after the 2006 antisemitic remarks and said, "I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said." He added, "I have battled with the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse." Regarding the scandal with his ex, he told Deadline, "I've never treated anyone badly or in a discriminatory way based on their gender, race, religion, or sexuality. I don't blame some people for thinking I'm bigoted, though, from all the garbage they heard on those leaked tapes."

18. Lastly, in 2009, after Chris Brown assaulted Rihanna, a police evidence photo showing her injuries was leaked and published by TMZ, making the brutality of the attack impossible for the public to ignore. Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault and was sentenced to probation, community labor, and domestic-violence counseling. Still, despite the horror of the case and the overwhelming public evidence, his career did not end. He has kept releasing music, touring, charting, and maintaining an extremely loyal fanbase. It remains one of the clearest and most uncomfortable examples of how fame, fandom, and commercial success can survive even after serious allegations and documented acts of violence.

Chris publicly apologized in a YouTube video and told ABC News, "I was wrong for what I did. [...], and like I said, I'm — I'm really sorry for — for what went down. And what happened."
