Identifying real reasons LeBron James could sign with Timberwolves

1 hour ago 4

The Minnesota Timberwolves are legitimately considered to be one of the teams in the running to land LeBron James.

I know, that statement even a month ago would have been absolutely insane. However, James is parting with the Los Angeles Lakers, and is reportedly open to playing for the veteran minimum. James reportedly is only focusing on happiness when making his next team decision.

The Timberwolves could accommodate James much better now, too. The team no longer has Julius Randle, and features one of the more promising guard duos in the league with LaMelo Ball and Anthony Edwards.

As a result, some around the league think Minnesota has a real shot to land James. Let's talk about the reasons today.

Why would James choose Minnesota?

Liam McKeone and Blake Silverman of Sports Illustrated recently identified reasons why James would choose each NBA team. For the Wolves, the duo offered the following analysis:

There is no one roster more ready-made for a LeBron-sized addition than the Timberwolves, who have one power forward on the roster (Trey Lyles) after trading away Julius Randle and Naz Reid. Adding James would catapult Minnesota into serious contention and bringing this long-suffering franchise its first championship would be equally as impressive as what LeBron did in Cleveland. This opportunity feels like the right balance of what LeBron is looking for—there’s talent on the roster but he would still need to play a big role every night to reach title heights and the legacy boost in the case of success would be more significant than any other option.

As McKeone and Silverman pointed out, there's perhaps no better roster fit for James than Minnesota. The Timberwolves have no starting-level power forward on the roster, and James' legendary presence would greatly help Ball and Edwards.

Plus, if you think James cares about his legacy, he would have a great chance to make it even greater in Minnesota. The Timberwolves have never won an NBA championship, so imagine if James was able to change that.

James would have successfully brought a title to Cleveland, Miami, Los Angeles, and Minnesota. That's a resume that's probably never getting touched and would definitely add more drama to the GOAT debate.

Plus, the Wolves are a good team with a couple great players, but not so good that James would be a background character. James clearly still wants to play a large role and contribute to winning, and teaming up with Ball, Edwards, and Rudy Gobert would certainly be a formidable squad.

In 2025-26, at age 41, James still averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds, while shooting 51% from the field and 31% from three. That's still the type of production that can swing a title race, and adding him is the type of move that would immediately put the Wolves in the same conversation as the Thunder and Spurs
