The Odyssey is currently tearing up the box office off the back of amazing critic and audience reviews, but the movie has now set yet another record.

IMDB has just announced that The Odyssey has set a record within its Top 250 list of movies, or rather, helped its director Christopher Nolan set one.

The Odyssey has debuted at #59 on the Top 250 list, which is not a record in and of itself (#3 is The Dark Knight), but what it does mean is that Christopher Nolan now has 9 films in the IMDB top 250, more than any other director. Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese and Stanley Kubrick have 7 each, Akira Kurosawa and Quentin Tarantino have 6 each.

What are the 9 movies and where are they ranked?

  • #3 – The Dark Knight, 9.1/10
  • #14 – Inception, 8.8/10
  • #17 – Interstellar, 8.7/10
  • #42 – The Prestige, 8.5/10
  • #58 – Memento, 8.4/10
  • #59 – The Odyssey, 8.5/10
  • #77 – The Dark Knight Rises, 8.4/10
  • #135 – Oppenheimer, 8.2/10
  • #136 – Batman Begins, 8.2/10

So, not only does he have 9 films on the list, but 7 of them are in the top 100 as well. Films that didn’t make the list are the likes of Tenet, Dunkirk and Following.

To be fair, most would admit that IMDB skews toward more modern films much of the time. Additionally, 70% of raters are men (that’s just context, not judgment). I just don’t know if you can claim that The Dark Knight is better than, say, The Godfather Part II, 12 Angry Men and Schindler’s List, per se.

Looking at the details of The Odyssey’s ratings, it has a full 34% 10/10 reviews, balancing 8.7% of 1-star slammers. It has 60% 9-10 ratings overall, resulting in the high score. The Odyssey has already set Rotten Tomatoes critic and audience score records for Nolan’s work, though now dropping a percentage point, it is tied with The Dark Knight at a 94% among critics. It still has a 97% audience score.

No one knows what Christopher Nolan’s next project will be, the director having effectively a blank check to do whatever he feels like at this point, especially with The Odyssey sailing toward a billion dollars at the box office. He’s expressed interest in making a horror film (you can see how that might go in certain Odyssey sequences), and he’s previously spoken about doing a James Bond movie. The next one, however, is going to fellow auteur Denis Villeneuve.

Whatever happens next, we may be looking at 10 features in the list, at least based on his last two. We’ll be waiting 2-4 years for that, however, most likely.
