Is Framework Teasing New 2-In-1 Laptops And A Future Gaming Device?

1 year ago 26

Framework, the computer manufacturer with a focus on modular, repairable, upgradable laptops, is hosting a live event on February 25 which will also be streamed on its YouTube channel. And by the looks of things, it is poised to announce several new products, promising that one of them will be up for pre-order on the same day as the event.

Framework’s last live event was back in March 2023, where it showed off two new versions of the Framework 13, and unveiled the Framework 16 laptop with a modular graphics card option.

In a new blog post today, Framework founder Nirav Patel says the company has been “heads down working for the last two years on an even bigger set of announcements.”

What Is Framework Announcing?

What could eclipse Framework’s first-generation products? And what scale of announcement warrants inviting press, partners, and the general public to its event in San Francisco? The blog post contains one big clue, but a cryptic, image-laden teaser on the event page holds several more.

First, the clue within the blog post. “We’re eager to continue supporting and scaling the ecosystems around our current products, and we’re ready to bring this mission and product philosophy to even more of the world, one category at a time [emphasis mine].” This strongly suggests that Framework is about to expand beyond the traditional laptop form factor.

Now the fun part, and the following is pure speculation. Please note that although I’ve been invited to the event by Framework’s PR representatives, I don’t have any insider knowledge.

Let's unpack these clues!

Framework

I believe we should expect three unique new product announcements.

The color wheel next to an individual in a yoga pose can be interpreted in multiple ways. It could be a nod to Lenovo’s Yoga line of laptops, suggesting 2-in-1 form factors and a 360-degree hinge. At the very least, it’s implying flexibility and choice, and since the company is leading with that in its teaser, I really think it’s a new chassis. Perhaps a new chassis with an expanded selection of bezel colors?

The lightning bolt? Something powerful, surely. AMD is launching new Radeon RX 9000 series GPUs in March, and we know that “partners” are invited to this event. Could this hint at a more powerful graphics module for the Framework 16?

Or, equally as likely, could the lightning bolt suggest “Thunderbolt 5” with new systems powered by Intel Lunar Lake mainboards?

Finally, we come to the clue that gets my heart racing. “Something worthy of” followed by what looks like a LAN party photo, a gamepad, and a bowl of Cheetos. This one’s puzzling, but I’m going to take a wild shot in the dark:

Framework will announce a mini-PC with the AMD Ryzen AI Max “Strix Halo” processor or some kind of UMPC (Ultra Mobile PC) form factor device resembling a Steam Deck. The former is more likely, while the letter is more ambitious. If either of these products are announced, SteamOS will be touted as a compatible operating system alongside Windows.

We know Valve is bringing SteamOS to handhelds beyond the Steam Deck, but Valve hasn’t committed to non-handheld devices just yet. And Framework certainly has the engineering chops to design a handheld gaming device. But I’m not as confident in that direction, and that’s based on the gaming clues that are in that image.

A LAN party and a separate controller certainly don’t call to mind a handheld, which lacks an Ethernet port and doesn’t need a separate controller. Plus, LAN parties are – at least traditionally – known for being gatherings powered by desktop PCs.

Heck, I’d take a mini-PC powered by Bazzite.

Fortunately, all this exciting speculation will end in two weeks. Framework will stream its event live on YouTube, February 25 at 10:30am Pacific Time.
