Jaylen Brown trade details: Sixers acquire former Finals MVP in deal with Celtics

The Boston Celtics didn't win the Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes, but they aren't standing pat after an early playoff exit.

The Celtics have agreed to trade Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers, parting ways with the All-Star and former NBA Finals MVP after a decade-long partnership.

Brown was the subject of frequent trade rumors during his time in Boston, but he validated the Celtics’ decision to keep their core intact by helping power the franchise to a championship in 2024. With Jayson Tatum out for most of this past regular season, Brown put together a terrific year with a career-high 28.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.

Now, Brown is set for a fresh start in the City of Brotherly Love.

The Sixers will have Brown under contract for three more seasons, as he is still playing out the max extension he signed with the Celtics in 2023. Here's more to know about his deal.

While Philadelphia solely acquired Brown in the deal, Boston received Paul George and four total draft picks in future drafts. The picks are split into two first-round picks and two second-round picks, with the years to be determined.

The Sixers now have a bona fide Big Three of Tyrese Maxey, Brown, and Joel Embiid, while still having V.J. Edgecombe as a fourth option. For Boston, this is now solely Jayson Tatum’s team. George had a resurgent year with the Sixers in 2025-26, but questions remain about how much longer he can perform at a high level.

Boston’s return of draft selections suggests the team may be banking on future youth development while still attempting to compete for NBA championships.

Brown has three years remaining on a five-year, $285.4 million max contract extension he signed with the Celtics before the 2023-24 season; the deal didn't take effect until 2024.

While the deal was questioned by many fans and pundits at the time, Brown quieted those concerns by helping lead the Celtics to a championship in 2024. It's still a massive deal, as Brown is set to count $57.1 million against the cap in 2026-27, $61.1 million in 2027-28 and $65.0 million in 2028-29, with no opt-out in the contract.

Brown's salary counts for between 34-36 percent of the cap over the next three seasons.

Brown averaged career-highs in points and assists last season, also matching his career-best in rebounds per game. Despite missing Tatum for most of the season, he was more efficient as a shooter than he was a year earlier.

Brown has averaged more than 20 points per game in seven consecutive seasons and has generally been durable over the years, rarely missing extended time with injury.

Brown has spent his entire career with the Celtics up to this point. Selected third overall out of California by the Celtics in 2016, Brown helped Boston become a legitimate threat in the East again, playing alongside Isaiah Thomas and Kyrie Irving in his early years but forming a strong connection with Jayson Tatum after the Celtics drafted the Duke forward in 2017.

Brown is a five-time All-Star and has earned two All-NBA Second Team selections; he finished sixth in NBA MVP voting this past season.
