The Dallas Cowboys believe their offense will continue to be one of the best in the NFL in 2026. Jerry Jones is more concerned about whether the new defense can improve enough under coordinator Christian Parker to bring Dallas back to the playoffs.
Jerry Jones points to Christian Parker as key to Cowboys’ turnaround
Jerry Jones has never suggested the Cowboys need the league's top defense to compete for a championship. Instead, the owner believes meaningful improvement on one side of the ball could completely change Dallas' outlook after last season's disappointing finish.
That confidence starts with Christian Parker, who enters his first season as an NFL defensive coordinator. Speaking during the NFL owners meetings in March, Jones acknowledged the challenge ahead but said Parker has an opportunity to reshape perceptions by leading a defense that struggled throughout last year.
Dallas made significant changes to its defense. The team signed safety Jalen Thompson and edge rusher Rashan Gary. They also drafted defenders Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence. These moves show that Dallas is committed to Coach Parker's system instead of just hoping for improvement from current players.
The organization feels positive about its offense. Dak Prescott will return, along with CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, and Javonte Williams, after Dallas ranked as one of the highest-scoring teams in the NFL. Having this consistency means the Cowboys don’t need a strong defense every week. As long as the defense can limit big plays and create more opportunities, it can effectively support the offense.
League history shows that successful Super Bowl teams combine strong offenses with reliable defenses. Teams that make the playoffs usually do not allow many points. Improving Dallas’s defense to a middle-of-the-pack level could greatly enhance its chances of making the playoffs.
Players and coaches have noticed positive changes during offseason practices. Brian Schottenheimer, Prescott, and Lamb all highlighted better communication and more energy on defense. This gives the Cowboys hope that their biggest weakness could turn into a reliable strength in 2026.
