The NFL is as cutthroat as it gets, as franchises have never been afraid to move on from assets they don’t feel would fit well with their respective organizations.
The New York Jets' latest roster move is proof of that, as the AFC East franchise cut ties with a 31-year-old Pro Bowler one week after signing him.
“Jets signed veteran K Jason Sanders and waived veteran K Younghoe Koo,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter wrote Wednesday.
When New York signed Koo last Wednesday, the expectation was that he would compete for the starting job immediately. After all, Koo possesses a solid resume as an NFL kicker thus far, as he earned a reputation for being reliable from 20-29 yards, 30-39 yards, 40-49 yards, and 50+ yards for most of his memorable stint with the Atlanta Falcons (he was also dependable in extra point situations).
The Georgia Southern product connected on a career-best 37 field goals in 2020-21, including eight 50+ kicks, making his Pro Bowl nod unsurprising. Koo has struggled recently, though, explaining why he competed with two teams during the 2025-26 season (Falcons and New York Giants).
Still, there was no reason to believe Koo wouldn’t last more than a week with the Jets. New York clearly saw something they didn’t like, prompting them to replace him with Sanders on the third day of June.
