Jim Bowden's proposed Hunter Goodman trade would cost the Red Sox far too much

Right now, the Boston Red Sox are arguably the best team in baseball, with the longest win streak in the MLB. With only a couple weeks until the trade deadline, Boston better start building up proposals to send to other teams.

Former MLB GM-turned-insider Jim Bowden believes he has the perfect move for Boston, which is trading for Colorado Rockies two-time All-Star catcher Hunter Goodman. However, his proposed deal might hurt the Sox more than it helps.

Bowden’s proposition is an overpay for Boston

Bowden’s proposal was this: get Goodman, and in return, send LHP Connelly Early, SS Marcelo Mayer, C Carlos Narvaez, and Boston’s No. 4 prospect RHP Kyson Witherspoon.

The problem is this is a massive overpay. When using Baseball Trade Value, the Rockies would be getting a package that is nearly three times the worth Boston gets from just Goodman. Goodman is a great player, but he’s not worth that much.

Goodman is still worth a gander

The thing is, Goodman is still a player Boston should take a look at. He’s slashing .257/.326/.561/.886 with 15 doubles, 30 home runs, and 56 RBI in 92 games.

He’s also not a victim of the Coors Light Field Effect, as a majority of his home runs are in opposing ballparks. On top of that, he’s a much better hitter on the road overall as well.

Finally, Goodman has multiple years of control after this season, which makes him more favorable than a rental.

What could the Red Sox counter with?

Most likely, using the trade Bowden proposed, Boston could either take Early out and use that package, or send Early straight up. While the former is better for Boston, the latter seems more likely, as Early has proven he has the talent to be a star at the major league level.

Either way, it would be a much better trade than the original Bowden proposed. It’s hard to make sense of how Bowden didn’t think this might be an overpay, but to be fair, overpays are common in today’s market.

The Red Sox have a good thing going right now, so losing core players that have helped them be winners, especially Early, might not be in their best interest. However, if they are still winning without Early at the deadline, anything can happen.
