The Houston Rockets believe they have assembled a roster capable of competing for an NBA championship. Now comes the hard part.
According to ESPN's latest NBA free agency intel, the Rockets have entered a championship window that may not stay open for long, putting enormous pressure on Kevin Durant and the rest of Houston's roster to deliver in the postseason.
The Rockets have spent the last two seasons building one of the NBA's deepest young cores, and this summer's moves made it clear the franchise is all-in on winning now. What was once viewed as a patient rebuild has evolved into a team with championship expectations, and those expectations have only grown heading into the 2026-27 season.
Houston is betting on experience
General manager Rafael Stone didn't make many splashy additions during free agency. Instead, Houston focused on strengthening its depth by signing veterans Marcus Smart and Bogdan Bogdanovic while also bringing back Tari Eason.
According to ESPN, the organization believes continued development from Amen Thompson, Alperen Sengun and Reed Sheppard, combined with Durant's leadership and the return of Fred VanVleet and Steven Adams, gives the Rockets everything they need to contend for a title. But ESPN's Michael C. Wright also offered a blunt reminder: the pressure has never been greater.

Time isn't on Houston's side
Durant turns 37 in September, and Houston is coming off back-to-back 52-win seasons that both ended with first-round playoff exits. According to ESPN, everyone inside the organization understands the expectations have changed. Simply reaching the playoffs is no longer enough. The Rockets are expected to make a deep postseason run.
That pressure extends well beyond Durant. Head coach Ime Udoka, Stone and Houston's talented young core all have something to prove after the organization doubled down on its current roster instead of making another blockbuster move.
The Rockets have assembled one of the NBA's deepest and most intriguing teams.
Now they'll have to prove that championship expectations aren't arriving too soon.
