LA Galaxy secure transfer for Japanese striker ahead of season restart

The MLS is set to return after a lengthy break due to the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday night, with teams all around the league welcoming fans back into their respective stadiums for some high-octane soccer. While the teams themselves will be returning, a certain subset of players will be making their debuts or at least addressing the crowd for the first time.

The latter can be said about the LA Galaxy's newest player, Kyogo Furuhashi, who was just recently signed, having made the move from Sky Championship Side, Birmingham City, as reported by The Athletic's Paul Tenorio and Gregg Evans. The Japanese forward had been a part of Birmingham's system for a lone season before the deal was made, a campaign that saw him net three goals across 31 appearances in the English second division.

The 31-year-old is moving across the pond after a lengthy spell in some of Europe's biggest leagues, having made a name for himself in the Scottish top flight with Celtic. With the Bhoys, Furuhashi would erupt for 81 goal involvements, with 30 of those goals coming in the 2022-23 season.

While there were reports following that season of a potential move to Manchester City could be on the cards, it wouldn't be, with Furuhashi taking his talents to Ligue 1 with Rennes following his time in Scotland.

This lone stint wouldn't do much for his career except get him that move to the aforementioned Championship club, but now he's in the City of Angels for the next chapter. The Japanese forward will join the Galaxy at quite an important time, with the side sitting on the edge of a play-off qualifying spot in 9th place in the Western Conference, only a single point away from missing out on any postseason action at all.

It's not known if Furuhashi will take to the field on Wednesday night, when the Galaxy are set to take on St. Louis City SC, who sit right below them in the Western Conference table.
