Lakers named best landing spot for $101 million ex-Cavaliers star

The Los Angeles Lakers are in the process of putting the finishing touches on their new-look roster.

Whether it’s landing Jonathan Kuminga in a sign-and-trade or swinging a deal for Nick Richards to further bolster their frontcourt (they’re reportedly interested in the Chicago Bulls big man), Lakers fans should expect the franchise to make one final splash before the start of the 2026-27 season.

Lakers Nation’s Trevor Lane has an interesting suggestion for the 17-time NBA champions, as he believes that a reunion with a 41-year-old former Cleveland Cavaliers star is the best-case scenario for the franchise.

“LeBron’s (James) BEST landing spot would actually be to reconsider & return to the Lakers,” Lane wrote on X/Twitter Wednesday. “I mean Luka (Doncic)/(Collin) Sexton/(Jaden) Hardy/Bronny (James): (Austin) Reaves/(Cameron) Carr/(Matisse) Thybulle/(Dalton) Knecht/(Quentin) Grimes/(Jake) LaRavia/(Zhaire) Williams LeBron/(Adou) Thiero/Vando (Jarred Vanderbilt) (Walker) Kessler/Mamu (Sandro Mamukelashvili)/(Kevon) Looney. That’s a VERY interesting team.”

If the Lakers were to sign James to a short-term deal (they would likely offer him a minimum contract), they would have to part ways with two contributors to make room for the four-time NBA champion (they would have 17 players on the roster with James in the fold in a hypothetical scenario).

As great as James is, most would agree that now is the best time for the Lakers to give Doncic the keys and end the James era after eight impactful seasons. It’s been challenging for Los Angeles to hide their eagerness to anoint Doncic the face of the franchise, as they’ve already held an end-of-season meeting with Doncic present and James absent (after the 2024-25 season) and catered to Doncic’s needs to the best of their ability.

Simply put, the Lakers will always be appreciative of everything James helped the franchise accomplish from 2018-26, but it’s time to move on.
