League of Legends fans are angry over changes to how in game rewards, including the ability to unlock new champions without spending cash, are handed out in the new season.

When the new season launched a few days ago, the response was surprisingly positive for what is ultimately one of the smallest new seasons ever. The changes to the map were generally well received, the new epic monster Atakhan is already a fan favourite and everything seemed to be going well. But a few days on, players are realising that it now seems more difficult than ever to unlock new champions for free.

Previously earning enough in game currency to buy a new champion from the League of Legends store, or earning an in game item that would unlock them for free, wasn’t too much of a tough task providing you were a regular player. But, with the decision from Riot to remove a lot of these systems in favour of a more traditional battle pass, it is now incredibly hard for players to earn champions for free.

There’s no exact science on how many champs you can unlock via the battle pass, as the guaranteed rewards are still only Champion Capsules, which can give a random reward related to a random champion, so one for a champ you don’t want might not be particularly useful. But, even if things go your way, the mathematicians believe you’ll still struggle to unlock as many champions with this new season than previous ones.

What has become a big talking point is the fact that once you complete the 50 base levels of the battle pass, it would likely take you over 800 hours to earn enough in game currency from the repeating rewards to have enough to unlock a new champion.

Many fans have taken to social media to complain about the changes and how difficult it now is for players to unlock champions for free. The League of Legends sub-Reddit is full of people talking about these changes, and also complaining about how the value of this battle pass seems to be significantly less in general compared to previous ones.

Andrei “Riot Meddler” van Roon, the head of League Studio, has said on X that the team is looking into the reports that it is now harder to unlock champions with Blue Essence, the in game currency you can earn, as that should not have been the case. However, it seems that the other factors making it harder to unlock champions are intended and will be sticking around.

Some fans are calling for all League of Legends champions to be made free to play, just like Dota 2 has done since it launched. However, the fact that champs likely still make Riot a ton of cash, and the big deal the company has with Microsoft to allow all PC Game Pass subscribers to have all champs unlocked as part of their subscription, means that is incredibly unlikely to happen.
