It's not totally fair to combine two trades, not made at the same time, and act like it's one big deal.
But what the Toronto Maple Leafs have done with Brandon Carlo in the last two years, getting him from the Boston Bruins and then sending him to the St. Louis Blues, looks really ugly for the Leafs.
The Maple Leafs traded for Carlo on March 7, 2025, getting him from Boston. They sent young center Fraser Minten to the Bruins along with a first-round pick -- which has since become an unprotected first-rounder in 2028.
Minten looks like a rising star, and that first-round pick could be a good one.
The Maple Leafs moved on from Carlo on Saturday during the 2026 NHL Draft. They received the Nos. 73 and 76 picks from the Blues for him.
They used those picks on Zach Olsen, a winger, and defenseman Mans Gudmundsson.
So for those keeping score at home, when accounting for what has happened since:
- The Maple Leafs initially traded away Fraser Minten, a 2025 fourth-round pick and a 2028 first-round pick.
- They have eventually received two 2026 third-round picks.

Yeah, that's not exactly even.
Obviously, Carlos' value declined over a year-plus, and that's the story here.
But it's also clear that Toronto messed up. The Maple Leafs won't soon feel good about having given up Minten and that pick, because the trade really didn't work out at all.
