Maple Leafs make stunning addition of Senators legend to help Gavin McKenna

The Toronto Maple Leafs... and Daniel Alfredsson?

It's a partnership that not many would've seen coming, given Alfredsson's legendary career with the Ottawa Senators.

But it's a partnership that is here.

Alfredsson is a new assistant coach on the staff of new Maple Leafs head coach Jim Hiller.

The Leafs announced their staff news on Tuesday:

John Gruden, Daniel Alfredsson and Brad Werenka have been named to our coaching staff

Alfredsson is a Hall of Fame forward originally from Sweden.

He played his first 17 NHL seasons with Ottawa before one final campaign with the Detroit Red Wings.

Alfredsson scored 426 (of 444) goals with the Senators and had 682 (of 713) assists with Ottawa, too.

The 5-foot-11 winger wasn't a physical player but he was so skilled and agile that he didn't need to overpower opponents. He could simply outplay them.

Now, he comes to help Toronto try to bounce back from a miserable season.

Alfredsson also might be the perfect mentor to Gavin McKenna, a winger who was just the No. 1 overall pick in the NHL Draft.

It seems a great hire for the Maple Leafs. It'll just be odd for a little while to see Alfredsson involved on the Toronto side.
