Marlins draft brother of Yankees' top prospect George Lombard Jr. at No. 14 overall

The Miami Marlins had the No. 14 overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft, and with that pick, they took a High School shortstop who has some incredible power and speed abilities.

As USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports, the Marlins are drafting Jacob Lombard with the 14th selection in the MLB Draft, taking a player who has some ties to the big leagues already.

As Nightengale also notes, Lombard is the younger brother of New York Yankees infield prospect George Lombard Jr., with both being the sons of Detroit Tigers bench coach George Lombard.

"Jacob Lombard, the brother of Yankees' prized prospect George Lombard Jr. and the son of Tigers bench coach George Lombard, is drafted by the Marlins," Nightengale reports.

Lombard is an 18-year-old shortstop who's a right-handed hitter coming out of High School who has 65-graded run and 60-graded power.

On MLB Pipelines' prospect rankings for 2026, Lombard came in as the No. 5-ranked prospect. The Marlins just got him at No. 14 overall.

Not only did the Marlins get the brother of the Yankees' prized prospect in Jacob Lombard, but they might've also gotten a big steal during the draft as well.

Not only is it a fun storyline, but it's a good pick too. Lombard is an exciting shortstop prospect, and one who will certainly take a while to get up to the big leagues. But the wait might be more than worth it if he reaches his potential.

This was a good selection for Miami, and it comes amid a great season for the Marlins, who are just 3.0 games back of the Atlanta Braves for the top spot in the NL East.
