The New York Mets are going through some major issues this season, and while they're not out of the playoff hunt just yet, the way things are trending, they're likely to be deadline sellers.
However, there's still time between now, June 4, and the August 3 trade deadline. So, over the next two months, what is the Mets' objective?
ESPN's Jeff Passan revealed what the Mets need to do over the next few months, and it's a bleak reminder that this team really shouldn't be in such a bad spot.
Mets' objective for MLB trade deadline is a bleak one
"Objective: Wait to get healthy before making any decisions," Passan writes. "The Mets have enough whisps of life left in them that president of baseball operations David Stearns will let Francisco Lindor, Francisco Alvarez, Jorge Polanco, and Kodai Senga return and then take account of where the team finds itself."
This objective for the Mets is a bleak one. While it might've been worse if the Mets were clearly described as sellers, this limbo state is far from ideal as well.
Even though the season is in bad shape, the Mets can still try to salvage things, as they're not out of the hunt just yet.

In such a place as a franchise, the Mets aren't going to immediately trade away their key players this season. Freddy Peralta, Huascar Brazoban, A.J. Minter, Brooks Raley, Mark Vientos, Brett Baty, and many others could be on the move this season.
But, any trades, in Passan's opinion, should be put on the back burner for now. The Mets are expected to wait for these stars to return to the MLB roster, which is a bleak situation for the team as they remain in limbo this season.
Being forced to wait for injured players to return, and see how they perform for the struggling Mets sets up for a potentially disappointing and bleak next few months ahead of the deadline.
