Have you ever wondered what happens on the internet in a single minute? Probably not, but as a market researcher, these are the kinds of things that pop into my mind. My curiosity, influenced by 40+ years as a tech analyst, often causes me to ponder the idiosyncrasies of what was once called "the information highway."

My journey of conducting research on the internet began in 1995 when I was privileged to have dinner with a major venture capitalist who had just backed a start-up called Netscape. That night, he introduced me to Jim Barksdale, the former CEO of FedEx, who had just become the CEO of Netscape. Both men talked glowingly about Netscape's front-end software, which made access to the internet consumer-friendly.

After that dinner, I began researching the internet and realized it would change our world. Indeed, the internet gave humanity access to a world of information and sparked our tech revolution.

A few years back I ran across a research survey from AI and data products firm, Domo, about what happens every minute on the internet. Domo just released its annual "internet minute" report, the 12th edition, titled Data Never Sleeps 12.0.

Their report states that, "The phenomenal acceleration of generative AI over the past two years has dominated the digital conversation, and this year's Data Never Sleeps shows how we've reached a new tipping point. AI is primed to dethrone competitive mainstays of the internet era," said Josh James, founder and CEO of Domo. "In the year ahead, we'll be watching how this shift changes our broad range of digital activity, impacts the competitive landscape, and accelerates corporate investment in AI-ready data and tech."

Domo is a company that provides business analytics, visual and interactive data for intuitive analysis. Their goal is to simplify, automate, and enable business intelligence on demand. They provide AI-powered data, insights and impact at scale.

Domo has provided in the report a detailed infographic that shares their research about what transpires on the internet every minute.

In Domo's 12th edition of Data Never Sleeps, captures a snapshot of this world powered by the rapid ... [+] rise of data, Al, and digital activity, shaping every moment of modern life.

Here are some highlights in the 12th edition of this report-

  • Google searches per minute have decreased from a high of 6.3 million last year to 5.9 million, a 6% drop that puts it back to 2022 levels.
  • Email sent increased from 241 million per minute last year to 251.1 million.
  • Texts sent shot up from 16 million per minute (in 2022) to 18.8 million.
  • In 2023, viewers watched 43 years of content per minute. This year, the entertainment slices depict YouTube video views (3.5 million per minute) and Reels played on Meta's platforms (138.9 million per minute).
  • Slack users sent 148,000 messages per minute in 2021 but now shoot out 1.04 million.
  • Taylor Swift had 69,400 hits per minute.
  • Snapchat users send 3.3 million snaps a minute.
  • 4080 records compromised per minute in data breaches.
  • Doordash diners place $126,763 in orders per minute.
  • 852 Airbnb stays booked per minute.
  • In 2020, there were 4.5 million people on the internet. That grew to 5.5 million in 2024.

It will be interesting to see how current and new categories will pop up in the next edition of this report as AI's impact could dramatically accelerate what is done in one minute on the internet and give them and us new data points of AI's impact on this particular piece of research.

For example, next year's data could include how many ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, etc. queries are made every minute. Or how much crypto has been bought in one minute? Or how many people left Meta’s Facebook, X or other social media platforms in a single minute.

It also points out one of the bigger conundrums in tech: how to power the acceleration of data demands. No wonder AWS, Microsoft, Meta, and major data centers are backing nuclear power to meet their growing power needs.

You can imagine that this much traffic processed over the internet in just one minute taxes our current data centers today and more so in the future. I find reports like this interesting and informative as they share an important story about a few collective trends over the last year.

The rapid evolution of the internet, fueled by data, AI, and digital activity, continues to reshape how we live and work, often in ways we cannot fully grasp. I’m already looking forward to Domo’s updates in version 13 at the end of 2025.
