Netflix has just added a brand new original sci-fi series, and it’s one we seem to be able to put in the “great” camp after some amount of misses in the past (though certainly a few hits).

That show is Cassandra, a German series about a rogue AI with the difference to other projects being it has a retro aspect, an alternate past where this tech is invented in the 1970s, despite AI’s new relevance in present day. Here’s the synopsis:

“A family moves into the oldest smart home in Germany, decades after the original owner dies; the AI household helper awakens, and is resolved to never be alone again.”

As it stands, the series has a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, albeit with not that many reviews in yet. Foreign series like this often have trouble attracting critics to watch it and score it, as evidenced by the recent The Åre Murders, which only has five critic ratings in despite being the top 2 or 3 most-watched US show on the Netflix Top 10 list for over a week now. Cassandra already has at least that many on day one, but it’s still not many.

Rotten Tomatoes

We have seen a whole lot of films about rogue AIs recently, from Subservience to M3GAN to AfrAId to Companion. Companion is easily the best one out of all of those, and it’s the only one where the AI is actually a victim rather than a perpetrator. Trust me, go see that in theaters while it’s still there.

Cassandra seems to be doing better than most, and even if scores drop a little bit, it will still be a top ranked AI-based psychological horror film. Here’s what some of the critics are saying about it:

  • Common Sense Media – “Villain AI Cassandra's retro design turns out sloppy rather than scary – but in an amusing way adds some B-movie charms reminiscent of 1980s Hollywood.”
  • Collider – “Fusing elements of sci-fi, horror, psychological thriller, and women-focused family dramas of decades past, Cassandra is quieter than the company's films but still a sleek, ambitious limited series with plenty of meat on its bones...”
  • Movies and Munchies – “The excitement and nervousness will have you on the edge of your seat while you constantly look over your shoulder to ensure your smart devices aren’t scheming behind you.”

The show is lacking many higher profile review site scores and the moment, but so far so good. It seems that even in this age of media and real-life AI overload, Cassandra is going to be worth checking out. I’m certainly going to.
