Nothing is the London-based technology company which “became the fastest-growing brand in the smartphone and audio industries,” according to an email from co-founder Carl Pei which has leaked, and was posted on X by frequent leaker Evan Blass.

Nothing Phone (2a) Plus: Nothing Phone (3) is on its way.

Nothing

To be clear, it’s the sort of leak that is so positive that Nothing really won’t mind that it’s become public. Whether it was accidental or not, it’s an interesting read and describes the company’s journey.

It reveals that in the early days one venture capitalist apparently had no confidence in the company’s success, though this has now changed. Pei says, “As we prepare to go full steam ahead, I’m reminded of something a VC told me at the end of last year: ‘When we spoke in 2020, we thought you had a 95% chance of failing. This industry is too hard. Sorry for not believing in you, but from here on, we will support you however we can.’ The reality is, he was right.”

He goes on, “From the beginning, we knew our key focus had to be on the most widely used product in the world: the smartphone. With over 4 billion users globally, it’s a product that no matter what the future holds, ensures reach and relevance. Building that foundation was crucial. We’ve now beaten the odds… as we enter 2025. Last year was pivotal for Nothing. It was all about scaling, and we succeeded as a team.”

Intriguingly, Pei goes into more details of what’s coming, confirming that the next flagship, Nothing Phone (3) will launch this year. “It will introduce breakthrough innovations in user interface, taking our first step toward our AI-powered platform. We’re aiming at redefining the user experience of personal computing devices - creating technology that knows you, makes your life easier, and is present where you are. Technology that enables us to achieve our greatest creative potential,” Pei’s email says.

It concludes with one other interesting detail: “First up in Q1, we have a landmark smartphone launch that the world will be very excited to see.”

Is this the Phone (3), in which case we have a release date, or could it be a completely different phone? We’ll know in the next few weeks.
