Hey there, Connectors! Welcome to my deeper dive into today’s Connections answers. The idea behind this is to help clear things up for anyone who isn’t sure how today’s groups fit together.

I’m going to assume that you’ve already beaten today’s game. We’re going straight into spoiler territory here. So, consider this your one and only warning.

Here are today’s NYT Connections answers explained (and any red herrings I spot) for Wednesday, July 22:

Today’s NYT Connections Answers Explained

Connections – Yellow Group

🟨 symptoms of an allergic reaction (HIVES, ITCHING, RASH, REDNESS)

HIVES are red bumps that appear on the surface of one’s skin. They’re often itchy. A RASH is similar, though it comprises spots rather than elevated bumps.

Connections – Green Group

🟩 on a golf scorecard (HOLE, PAR, SCORE, STROKES)

In golf, PAR is the number of STROKES that it should ostensibly take an accomplished golfer to complete a HOLE, round or tournament. A SCORE of below PAR is what golfers aim for.

Connections – Blue Group

🟦 platform-specific posts (PINS, SNAPS, TWEETS, VINES)

These refer to posts on:

• PINS > Pinterest
• SNAPS > Snapchat
• TWEETS > Twitter (or, sigh, X)
• VINES > Vine

Vine was a video-sharing app owned by Twitter that pre-dated TikTok. Users would post looping videos (or VINES) that lasted six seconds or less. A spiritual successor, Divine, debuted a few months ago.

Connections – Purple Group

🟪 features of a zebra (HOOVES, MANE, TAIL, WHITE STRIPES)

Yep, the category handles things for us here!

Connections – Red Herrings

WHITE STRIPES, STROKES, HIVES and VINES are all "The ___" garage rock bands that became popular in the 2000s. Here’s a song from each of them, just because!

Also, the golf words had a fifth contender with PINS. As for HOLE, that band reached the height of their success in the '90s.
